North Iowa Outlaws News Release
Mason City (IA) Sometimes there is no better distraction from the trials and tribulations of daily life then to escape into the world of a good book. Avid readers will say they live by it while others may simply take the easy way out and lean towards television, the Internet or other media. This is particularly true for children for whom reading beyond what is required for school may seem tedious compared to the ease of "surfing the net."
As a way to encourage area children to take part in more recreational reading, the North Iowa Outlaws and the Mason City Public Library teamed up to offer their first Read and Score promotion during the Fall. Local children were encouraged to read three books at the Mason City Public Library, each time getting a card stamped. Upon reading three books, a child received a FREE ticket to the Outlaws' December 6th home game.
On December 6th, the Outlaws welcomed over 50 area kids who had taken part in the promotion meaning over 150 books were read as part of the campaign.
"This was the first time we did something like this so we weren't sure what to expect but we were more than satisfied" said Outlaws' Director of Communication Scott Montesano. "We were very excited to be able to partner with the Public Library and come up with a fun way to get kids to do more reading outside of school activity."
The library's children's' activity director Gretchen Hayes echoed that by adding, "It was a great idea and we are thrilled so many books were read for the program."
The Outlaws and Mason City Public Library plan to continue the program in the future, possibly as early as this spring.
The Outlaws return to action on Friday and Saturday when they travel north to play the Albert Lea Thunder.
Successful Teddy Bear Toss
The Outlaws are proud to announce that more than 200 stuffed animals were collected as part of the team's annual "Air the Bear" Teddy Bear Toss, held on Saturday December 6th. Fans were encouraged to bring new stuffed animals to the game and after the Outlaws' first goal, they were asked to toss their stuffed animal onto the ice.
All the stuffed animals were then donated to the local chapter of the United Way for distribution throughout the region.
The North Iowa Outlaws Hockey Club is in its fourth season as members of the North American Hockey League. The NAHL is the nation's largest Junior A hockey league and is now in its 33nd year of operation. For more information, visit northiowaoutlaws.com or call (641) 424-5468.
