Chico Outlaws News Release
(Chico, CA Aug 25th, 2010) The Outlaws winning ways at Nettleton Stadium seem to have returned as Chico got a 9-2 victory over the St George Roadrunners to win their second consecutive game at home.
After snapping a nine-game home losing skid on Saturday against Maui, the Outlaws turned to Kris Honel for the opener of a seven-game series with the Roadrunners. Honel (8-2) did not disappoint, striking out 10 batters in seven and a third innings of work, allowing just five hits.
The Roadrunners countered with rightie David Liffers (0-1), making his first start of the year.
St George got on the board in the top of the first when when center fielder Cody McMorris walked to lead off the game, then advanced to second on a passed ball. After stealing third, McMorris came home on a second passed ball to score the game's first run, which turned out to be unearned. Honel, who leads the GBL in walks with 58, ended up issuing six free passes to first on the night.
The home team answered in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one each when Blake Gailen scored on a sac fly by JJ Sherrill.
Chris Brown of the Roadrunners hit his first professional homerun in the top of the third to put the visitor's back on top 2-1.
Chico busted the game open with a four-run third inning. Honel led things off with a walk, followed by a single by Gailen to put two runners on. One batter later, Sherrill hit a bases-clearing triple, his first of the year, to score Honel and Gailen and put the Outlaws up 3-2. Right fielder Mikael Jova immediately brought in Sherrill with a double to right and then came in to score himself when Mark Samuelson's hard ball went through the legs of St George second baseman Chris Nastasi, making the score 5-2 Chico.
Two more runs plated for the Outlaws in the fifth inning when catcher Robby Alcombrack hit Chico's second triple of the game to drive in Samuelson. Shortstop Pascual Del Real then cashed in Alcombrack with an RBI single and it was 7-2.
The final two runs of the night were unearned off Roadrunners relievers Sean Guinard and Mike Roth. Liffers lasted five innings and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits, striking out two and walking one.
Rusty Jones pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief to finish the game for Honel, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Chico is now 16-15 in the second half, while St George is now 7-20.
The Outlaws continue a seven-game series with the St George Roadrunners with a double-header on Thursday. Reed Dickert (4-4, 5.78) will be opposed by St George's Loren Lauver ((0-1, 8.10) in game one, while Yosandy Ibanez (3-1, 2.67) will get the ball for Chico in game two against a to-be-determined starter for the Roadrunners. First pitch for game one is 6:00 pm, with the second game to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
The game will be broadcast live on the Outlaws Baseball Network at 6:00 pm. Fans can catch all the action with Dan Hawkins starting at 5:45 pm. Watch live on www.justin.tv.com/chicooutlawsbaseball or audio only at www.chicooutlaws.com.
