Chico Outlaws News Release

ST. GEORGE, UT - The Chico Outlaws, fresh off a disappointing four-game sweep at the hands of the Long Beach Armada, took out their frustrations on St. George Friday, pounding out 21 hits en route to a 17-8 victory over the Roadrunners in the opener of a two-game mini-series at Bruce Hurst Field...the Outlaws snapping their seven game losing streak while stopping St. George's win streak at five.

It was actually the Roadrunners who scored first - with two on in the 2nd inning, Angel Sanchez cracked a home run off Outlaws starter Greg Bicknell to give St. George an early 3-0 lead. Chico plated a pair of runs in the 3rd on a Tony Torcato sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single by Bryan Silverman...but in the bottom of the 3rd Eddy Garabito doubled home Seth Loman to make the score 4-2. Casey Garrison's 10th home run of the year leading off Chico's 4th inning cut the Roadrunners lead to one...then in the 5th the Outlaws surged ahead - a Torcato sac fly and back-to-back RBI doubles by Garrison and Todd Gossage gave Chico a 6-4 lead. Loman led off the St. George 5th with a home run to make it 6-5...but in the 6th the Outlaws pushed across two runs off Roadrunners reliever John Segovia to go up 8-5. St. George went to the long ball again to cut the deficit to two, as Sanchez bombed a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 8-6.

The Outlaws took control of the contest in the 7th - Chris Corso tripled home Gossage and Garrison and then scored on a Matt Ceriani single to put Chico up 11-6...Jesse Kovacs walked to put two aboard; Ceriani came home three batters later when Torcato delivered an RBI single to center. The Outlaws made it 13-6 when Kovacs scored from third on a wild pitch...then Silverman capped off the seven run rally, knocking in Torcato with a home run high over the center field wall...when the dust had cleared, Chico sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and held a commanding 15-6 lead. St. George came back to score two runs in the bottom of the 7th to make it 15-8, but Outlaws right-hander Zook Richardson - making his pro debut - got the final two outs to end the threat. RBI singles by Torcato and Dan Luyben put Chico back up 17-8, and Richardson retired the final six Roadrunners batters to close it out and give the Outlaws their fifth win over St. George in seven tries this season.

Bicknell (5-4) went six-and-a-third innings to pick up his first win since July 27th...St. George starter Maximo DeLaCruz (0-1) was charged with the loss. Luyben and Garrison each had four hits to lead the Outlaws offense; Gossage finished the night 3-for-4; Torcato collected five RBI with Silverman knocking in three...Sanchez knocked in five of the Roadrunners eight runs, with Cody Nowlin and Greg Lemon picking up two hits apiece for St. George. Friday's win upped the Outlaws second half record to 14-23 and overall mark to 29-50...the Roadrunners dropped to 38-42 for the year and 20-16 in the second half; but despite the loss St. George stayed just a half-game back of first place Orange County in the race for the GBL's South Division second half title. The second and final game of the series is set for Saturday, with left-hander Trevor Caughey (7-5) on the mound for Chico...St. George will counter with rookie righty Mac Nelson (3-0). First pitch is 6:20pm Pacific time... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
