Chico Outlaws News Release
LONG BEACH, CA - The Chico Outlaws first and only visit to Long Beach this season got off to a sour start Monday, as the host Armada defeated the Outlaws 6-2 at Blair Field...Chico dropping its fourth straight in the first of a four-game series and the opener of a big nine game road trip.
Monday's game marked the first time since June 8th the Outlaws and Armada had met on the field, and Long Beach wasted no time getting on the board against the Golden Baseball League's ERA leader Trevor Caughey - with one out in the 1st, Omar Bramasco doubled and Steve Moss drew a walk; with Ryan Lehr at the plate, they pulled a double steal...Lehr driving in Bramasco with a groundout to short. The Outlaws tied the game in the 3rd when Dan Luyben scored from third on Armada starter Steve Smyth's wild pitch ball four to Julian Benavidez...but in the 4th Long Beach went back in front to stay when Moss scored on a Brett Flowers groundout and Lehr came home on an infield single by Octavio Martinez.
While reliever Nick Bierbrodt kept Chico in check - allowing just two hits and striking out eight in four innings of work - the Armada added to their lead. In the 6th Lehr scored from third on a throwing error by Matt Ceriani to make it 4-1...then in the 7th Martinez connected off Caughey for a solo homer to put Long Beach up 5-1. The Outlaws plated an unearned run in the 8th off reliever Nick Cavanaugh - Steve Boggs reaching on an error and eventually scoring on a Julian Benavidez sacrifice fly - but in the bottom of the 8th the Armada pushed their lead back to four when Moss scored on a Benavidez error at third. Cavanaugh came back out to pitch a scoreless 9th, striking out Eric Pringle to lock down Long Beach's 6-2 victory.
Bierbrodt (4-5) got credit for the win, while Caughey (7-5) took the loss despite tossing a complete game. Long Beach had nine hits on the night, with Lehr finishing 3-for-4 and Martinez adding two hits and two RBI...Chico was held to just five hits, with Tony Torcato going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Ceriani adding a pair of singles. Monday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 13-20 in the second half and 28-47 on the year...the Armada improved to 17-15 in the second half (pulling to within a game-and-a-half of South Division leader Yuma) and 39-37 overall. Game two of the series is set for Tuesday, with right-hander Berek Fasking (2-3) getting the start for Chico...Long Beach will counter with righty Andrew Layfield (0-4). Game time is 7:05pm... hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
