
Outlaws Drop 12-5 Decision To Scorpions

YUMA, AZ - The Yuma Scorpions broke up a tight contest with seven unanswered runs and dealt the Chico Outlaws a 12-5 defeat Wednesday night at Desert Sun Stadium...Yuma winning the first two games of a four-game set.
Chico opened the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Steve Boggs came home on a two-out Daniel Nava single...but in the bottom of the 1st Yuma plated three off Outlaws starting pitcher Daniel "Duck" Howard - A.J. Valentine singled home Rich Janeway...Henry Calderon scored on a Maikel Jova groundout...and Yosvany Almario knocked in Valentine with a base hit to left. The Scorpions went up 4-1 with a run in the 2nd as Janeway doubled home Jordan Prado. The Outlaws tied the game with three runs in the 4th - Nava delivered an RBI single to plate Craig Kuzmic, then scored from second on a passed ball...Scott Dragicevich coming home one batter later on a Jason Van Meetren groundout.
Yuma went back on top 5-4 on a solo homer by Nik Crouch in the bottom of the 4th, but Chico came back to knot up the contest in the top of the 5th when Boggs singled home Tyler Dean. The Scorpions then took control of the game, taking the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th when Calderon scored on a double by Almario...Yuma went up 8-5 on a two-run home run by Janeway in the 6th...then in the 7th the Scorpions took advantage of four Paul Wilson walks, a wild pitch and a two-run single by Janeway to score four runs to push the lead to 12-5. Yuma relievers Jorge Perez and Neil Hayes combined to shut out the Outlaws over the final four innings to earn the victory and even the season series at four wins apiece.
Perez (1-0) got credit for the win, with Howard (1-1) suffering the loss. The Scorpions had 13 hits; Janeway finishing with a 4-for-5 night and five RBI...Nava had three of the Outlaws eight hits and drove in two. Wednesday's loss dropped Chico to 10-17 in the second half and 35-30 overall...Yuma improved to 18-9 in the second half and 39-26 on the year. Game three of the series is set for Thursday, with left-hander Derrick Loop (7-4) on the mound for the Outlaws; the Scorpions will counter with righty Eric Maydew (4-2)... game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
