Yuma Scorpions News Release

YUMA, Ariz. - Rich Janeway was a triple away from a cycle and his two-run home run in the sixth inning helped propel the Yuma Scorpions to a 12-5 win over the Chico Outlaws on Wednesday night.

The left fielder was 4-for-5 on the night with five RBIs as his long ball gave the Scorpions a three-run cushion they wouldn?t relinquish.

The six runs over the sixth and seventh innings was enough for reliever Jorge Perez, as the former and current member of the team earned his first win of the season for the club since being acquired from Quebec of the Canadian-American League.

?I haven't pitched (in relief) since when I was in affiliated ball back in 2002," Perez told the Yuma Sun.

?(Scorpions manager Mike Marshall) told me before that he might use me tonight if needed so I was ready and mentally prepared for it so when told me to get going I just got out there and tried to do the same thing I do when I am starting a game.?

The veteran right hander was strong in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and no runs to get the victory.

Yuma jumped out to a 4-1 lead early, highlighted by a three-run first inning, but the Outlaws stormed back to tie the game up twice, at 4-4 and 5-5.

Nik Crouch?s home run in the fourth inning and Yosvany Almario?s RBI double in the fifth re-gained the lead for Yuma in both innings.

Almario?s double scored Henry Calderon for the second time of the game. The two infielders each went 2 for 3 as the Scorpions outhit the Outlaws 13-8.

Yuma took control of the game with a four-run seventh inning to put the game away.

Daniel Nava led Chico with a 3-for-4 night that included two RBIs and a run scored.

Starting pitcher Daniel Howard got the loss (1-1) after allowing six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The two teams play game three of a four-game series at 7 p.m. tonight at Desert Sun Stadium.

NOTES: With the win, Yuma stayed three games behind the Long Beach Armada in the second-half standings after Long Beach defeated cross-town rival Orange County 9-2 Wednesday. The Scorpions and Armada meet this weekend for a two-game series that will likely determine the second-half champion. Chico is the first-half champion and will host Games 1 and 2 of the GBL Championship series on Tuesday, Aug. 28 and Wednesday, Aug. 29.
