Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws kept their slim playoff hopes alive and threw a major wrench in the post-season aspirations of the St. George Roadrunners, plating four unearned runs in the 7th inning on the way to a 7-3 victory Thursday night at Nettleton Stadium...the Outlaws sweeping the three-game set with St. George and extending the team's current winning streak to four.

The Roadrunners got off to a good start, scoring twice in the 3rd inning off Outlaws starting pitcher Berek Fasking - a throwing error by Chico catcher Matt Ceriani allowed Greg Lemon to score from third...then Juan Melo singled in Eddy Garabito to give St. George the early lead. The Outlaws got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Eric Pringle walked, stole second and scored on a two-out single by newly-acquired Dan Luyben...but in the 4th Liu Rodriguez led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later on a Juan Serrano sacrifice fly to put the Roadrunners up 3-1.

While Fasking kept the Roadrunners under wraps through the 6th inning, Chico chipped away at the St. George lead - Todd Gossage smacked a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th to make it a 3-2 ballgame...then in the 5th Luyben doubled home Steve Boggs to tie the score. The game was still knotted up in the 7th when former Outlaw John Segovia was summoned from the Roadrunners bullpen, and that's when Chico took control of the contest - a walk and two St. George errors loaded the bases with one out; Casey Garrison's sacrifice fly plated Ceriani to give the Outlaws their first lead of the night. Julian Benavidez followed with a base hit to center, chasing home Boggs to make it 5-3...then after a walk to Gossage, Bryan Silverman bounced a single through the left side of the infield to knock in Luyben and Benavidez and push Chico's lead to 7-3. The Outlaws bullpen did the rest - Todd Gelatka tossed a scoreless 7th and 8th inning...then right-hander Kevin Altman, making his Chico debut, got the final three outs in the 9th, striking out Melo to secure the win and give the Outlaws the series sweep.

Gelatka (3-3) got credit for the victory, with Segovia (2-4) suffering the loss. The Outlaws had just seven hits; Luyben finished the night 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Silverman had two hits and two ribbies...the Roadrunners racked up 11 hits in the losing effort, with Lemon, Melo, Rodriguez and Angel Sanchez collecting two safeties apiece. Thursday's win improves Chico's second half record to 13-16; they remain five-and-a-half games back of first place Edmonton in the North Division second half race and are now just a game behind second place Calgary...overall, the Outlaws are 28-43 on the year. St. George dropped to 14-14 in the second half and 32-40 for the year. Chico will host the Yuma Scorpions Friday in the opener of a three-game set...right-hander Eric Sheridan (3-1 with the Outlaws, 4-3 overall) will get the start, while the Scorpions are expected to throw righty Evan White (5-3). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
