December 3, 2023 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Owen Sound, Ontario - Short-term memory would be the name of game for the Erie Otters heading into their road series-finale with the Owen Sound Attack. After relinquishing a 2-1 first period lead enroute to a 7-4 loss on Saturday night, Erie would try to make something of the weekend trip to the northern reaches of the Midwest Division, looking to split the weekend with Owen Sound. With big points on the line, Erie would look for a quicker start.

A high-effort start to the game would see the Erie Otters rewarded with a power play less than 40 seconds in. On this power play opportunity, Brett Bressette (4, PPG) would give Erie the first goal of the night on their fourth shot. Erie would hold this lead for a little over six minutes, before an odd bounce off the back glass would be awarded as a goal to James Petrovski (2) to knot things up at one. Over three minutes later, captain Spencer Sova (10) would give Erie the lead back, 2-1. From there however, penalty trouble would start to afflict the Otters - starting with a power play goal from Cedrick Guindon (16), and a match-penalty slewfoot against Nicholas Holomego that would award the Attack a five-minute major. To start the major penalty kill, Deni Goure (15, PPG) would score with :52 left to put the Attack up 3-2.

Bad would turn to worse almost immediately in the second period for the Erie Otters, as the Attack would net two more quick power play goals from James Petrovski (3, PPG) and Servac Petrovsky (8, PPG). Erie would be down, but not out as Malcolm Spence (5, SHG) would respond almost immediately to give the Otters a fighting spirit that would see Martin Misiak (11) make it a one-goal game 4:45 into the second. From there, the goaltenders and defenses would step up to prevent any further opportunities. Erie would be unsuccessful on a number of power play opportunities - including a nearly two minute five-on-three. After 40, Erie would trail by just a goal, 5-4.

Erie knew the job that had to be done in the third period, but would need some time to get really revved up for the completion of the comeback. When it would finally come, Erie would not look back. On a Malcolm Spence-led rush, Kaleb Smith (3) would net his biggest goal of the season 11:24 in. Just over two-minutes later, Carey Terrance (19, GWG) would earn his first goal of the weekend - and the one to finally put the Otters over. With just under two minutes left, Pano Fimis (10) would get a penalty shot opportunity and convert to give the Otters insurance. Under :40 later, Carey Terrance (20, ENG) would cross the 20-goal threshold 26 games into the season to give Erie six-unanswered goals and an 8-5 win.

Thus concludes Erie's final trip to the Bayshore for the 2023-24 season - with Pano Fimis taking a six-point weekend. The Otters will return home Sunday evening, and prepare for a daytrip to St. Catharine's against the Niagara IceDogs on Thursday, before opening a three-game homestand to close the pre-Holiday portion of the season. Erie will play at home for Saturday night contest with the Guelph Storm for Native Heritage Night on December 9.
