Erie Otters News Release
Beau Schmitz scored the deciding goal in overtime for the Plymouth Whalers as they defeated the Erie Otters, 3-2, Monday afternoon at Compuware Arena.
Schmitz skated from his own end to the right faceoff circle and fired a shot over the right shoulder of Jaroslav Janus 2:18 into the extra period.
After a scoreless first period in which the Otters outshot the Whalers 16-9, the Whalers grabbed the first lead of the game when Tyler G. Brown knocked in a pass from Tyler Seguin at the crease at 13:23 of the second period.
Tyler Hostetter gave the Otters a much-needed lift when he took care of Tyler J. Brown in a fight at the 16:19 mark of the second. 57 seconds later, the Otters responded with a game-tying goal by Mike Cazzola, who finished off a give-and-go with Zack Torquato for his 17th goal of the season at 17:16.
In the third period, the Otters took their only lead of the contest when Andrew Yogan put home his own rebound 1:35 into the stanza for his 15th goal of the season. Stephen Genua and Shawn Szydlowski picked up the assists.
The Whalers tied the game with 8:44 left in regulation when Schmitz's shot off the faceoff was deflected by Ryan Hayes past Janus.
The goaltenders were the story of the game, as Janus and Matt Hackett each put on a clinic much to the delight of the fans in attendance.
The final minute of regulation featured key saves from both goaltenders, as Janus robbed Seguin of a game-winner on a breakaway with a save off the glove, and Hackett followed up by stoning Yogan from point-blank range. Janus continued his dazzling display by making three stops while the Whalers were piling on the pressure.
Janus continued with more great saves in the extra frame, but was beaten for the final time as Schmitz sneaked in the game-winner to hand the Otters a defeat. Janus made 31 saves for the Otters, who outshot Plymouth 38-34.
The Otters drive up I-75 to take on the Saginaw Spirit Tuesday evening at 7:11 p.m. The pre-game show starts at 6:55 p.m. Fans can listen to the broadcast locally on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan or online at ottershockey.com.
