Kansas City Outlaws News Release

When the Missouri River Otters and their mercenaries from the NHL came to Kemper Arena this past Monday, the Outlaws showed they could play with the big boys. In that contest, Missouri jumped to an early lead then barely hung on after a second period, 3 goal barrage by Kansas City. The reality, lately, is that any game between these teams is ultimately a St. Louis Blues alumni game. Tonight, the Outlaws took an early lead then won in dramatic fashion despite 2 points by hired guns Barret Jackman and Ryan Johnson of the Blues and another 2 by former Blue Jim Montgomery.

Kansas City's Jason Ruff opened scoring 10:29 into the first period. Ruff- who also skated for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning and St. Louis Blues earlier in his career- notched his 19th goal of the season, and 43rd point in 45 games played. Jay Murphy got the assist.

Montgomery and Johnson combined to tie things at 1-1 with just 45 seconds remaining in the first period. Montgomery beat Outlaws goalie Maxime Gingras for his 17th goal, and Johnson's assist gives him 10 points in as many games for Missouri.

After an uneventful second frame, Kansas City's Briane Thompson took the feed from Jimmy Callahan and Murphy, and regained the 1 goal lead at 9:53.

The lead didn't last long, as Outlaw Derek Kern went to the box for obstruction at 11:04. Missouri's Jackman evened the score at 2 each with the power play goal at 12:18. Montgomery got the assist, and regulation ended with the score 2-2.

In a shootout that went 6 rounds, Kansas City picked up goals from Jay Murphy, Mark Lee, and Vaclav Zavoral. Otters Barrie Moore and Lars Pettersen tallied for Missouri, but it wasn't enough. The Outlaws won by the final official score of 3-2.
