Ottawa Renegades Bolster Defense by Signing Five More

OTTAWA â Thursday, May 2, 2002 â The Ottawa Renegades have announced today that they have beefed up their defense, as the club has inked deals with Canadian Football League veterans Dwayne Provo and Vernon Mitchell, as well as Kevin Devine, Jamaal Alexander, and Terence Parrish. All five are defensive backs.
Provo, 31, is entering his seventh season in the league. The 5'10", 185-pound non-Import has played a total of 66 games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Montreal Alouettes, Edmonton Eskimos, and Toronto Argonauts. His best campaign was in 1998 when he made a career-high 37 defensive tackles, as well as totaling 139 yards and 2 touchdowns on 6 interception returns. The Halifax-native, who was an all-star in three different sports in college, including 1994 with the Saint Mary's Huskies football program, is also a former first round pick of the Green Riders, who selected him with the tenth overall pick in 1995.
Mitchell, 5'11", 202 pounds, is entering his third season in Canada. The 26-year-old Miami native has spent the last two campaigns with the Toronto Argonauts. The former Florida A&M All-Star totaled 45 defensive tackles in his rookie year with the Toronto Argonauts in 2000. He presently shares the CFL record with three interception TD returns in a season, a feat he accomplished that same year.
Devine, 27, Alexander, 25, and Parrish, 25, who each have National Football League experience, are entering their first season in the CFL. All three are American.
Devine, 5'10", 185 pounds, has played with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Cleveland Browns, and Minnesota Vikings since breaking into the NFL in 1997, playing 12 games with the Florida-based club following an exceptional college career at California-Berkeley. Alexander, 5'11", 218 pounds, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 6th round (185th overall), has also seen playing time with the St. Louis Rams, as well as the NFL-Europe-champion Frankfurt Galaxy in 2000. Parrish, 5'10", 201 pounds, comes to Canada after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2000. He split last season with the NFL-Europe Frankfurt Galaxy and the Bucs. Alexander and Parrish are both University of Southern Mississippi graduates.
"With the addition of these five young men, we believe that we have established a very competitive environment for training camp," explained Renegades general manager Eric Tillman. "With veterans like Gerald Vaughn and Ricky Bell also on our roster, we should have a nice mixture of youth and experience."
Professional football returns to the nation's capital this spring as the Ottawa Renegades open up their inaugural training camp on June 1st. The regular season kicks off on June 28 against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders at Frank Clair Stadium.
