Mississauga Power News Release
(OSHAWA, ON) It was a historic night for Canadian basketball as the Oshawa Power outlasted the Moncton Miracles 107-80 in front of 1,126 passionate fans at the General Motors Centre.
The Power showed absolute dominance over their opponents as they controlled the game from start to finish.
The Power won the first three quarters in convincing fashion and was able to relax a bit in the fourth quarter as the Miracles finally caught stride, but much too late, scoring 31 points in the final frame.
Small forward Akeem Wright had a break out game, notching a double-double while leading the Power with 27 points and 12 rebounds. A much smaller Power team also out- rebounded the much bigger Miracles team 68-47.
"We took care of the "three threes" rebounding, turnovers and free-throws," said Power Head Coach Mark Strickland.
"We were a plus in that and that‟s what we need to win, especially on the road. At home the crowd is always going to be energetic."
The enthusiastic Power fans were rocking from the opening tip. Canadians Kevin Francis and Tut Ruach combined for 16 points and 14 rebounds, in front of their family and friends.
Oshawa Mayor John Henry, wagered with Moncton Mayor George Leblanc about whose team would win, and since the Power were victorious, Mr. Leblanc will have to don a Power jersey at his next city council meeting.
It was a fitting end that the Oshawa Power got their first ever NBL Canada regular season victory on the fifth anniversary of the opening of the General Motors Centre.
