Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors were back in action on home ice tonight, facing the Oshawa Generals in a rare mid week match up at the Hershey Centre. The Generals left Mississauga with a 8-2 victory.

After losing back to back games at home in regulation for the first time all season, the Majors were looking to start strong. It didn't happen though as Oshawa scored early and often in the first period. Jimmy McDowell jammed home a rebound to open the scoring for Oshawa. McDowell's goal came at 5:12 and was assisted by Nicklas Jensen and Josh Graves. The Majors would then give Oshawa a two man advantage when Riley Brace and Chris DeSousa took slashing and interference penalties at 6:29. The Generals capitalized on the penalties, first with a goal from Christian Thomas at 7:37. The Thomas goal ended one penalty, but Oshawa remained on the man advantage, now a five on four. Next it was Lucas Lessio's turn as he netted his 23rd of the season to make it 3-0 Oshawa, less then ten minutes into the game. The Majors would answer back when they got a powerplay opportunity of their own and Brett Flemming pounced on a rebound and put it past Di Salvo to cut the deficit to two. Casey Cizikas and Marc Cantin had the assists. The Generals regained their three goal lead a couple of minutes later. Jensen broke into the Majors zone and went five hole on JP Anderson to make it 4-1 Generals. Goaltender Peter Di Salvo had the assists. Shots on goal after the first period were 14-11 in favour of Oshawa.

The second period was not as eventful as the first. The Majors appeared to be ready to cut into the 4-1 deficit, as they outshot the Generals by a large margin in the second period. However, it was a Dylan DeMelo penalty that led to the only goal of the period. DeMelo took an interference penalty at 17:06, to give Oshawa the man advantage. Just when it looked like the Majors had killed the penalty; the Generals expanded their lead on an odd goal. Scott Valentine took a shot that appeared to be going high and wide of the net, but the shot bounced off of Marc Cantin, and ended up in the Majors net, making it 5-1 Oshawa. The period ended, with the Majors down four goals, although they led the shots on goal, 16-7 in the second period.

Things looked brighter in the third, as the Majors began the period with a powerplay and had a couple of good opportunities to score but couldn't get the puck past Di Salvo. Then, five minutes into the period, after another penalty by Oshawa to Daniel Maggio, the Majors scored. The goal came only 20 seconds into the powerplay, and suddenly the game was within reach. That goal gave the Majors a boost and at 7:09 of the third, Oshawa forward Boone Jenner got a five minute major for slew-footing Majors Captain Casey Cizikas. Suddenly the Majors had some light and a real chance at making a comeback. However the penalty killing and goaltending for Oshawa were sharp and the Majors failed to generate any real good scoring chances during the five minute major penalty. This killed any momentum the Majors had built up in the third, and shortly after defenseman Alex Cord took a four minute double minor penalty that saw Tony DeHart put the dagger in with a shot from the point that eluded Anderson. The rest of the game was rough and chippy, as Sabourin and Berger each added goals for the Generals as good measure. Despite outshooting the Generals 38-30, the final score was 8-2 for Oshawa.

JP Anderson was between the pipes for Mississauga and made 22 saves on 30 shots. His counterpart, Peter Di Salvo was stellar in net for Oshawa, making 36 saves on 38 shots, earning him the first star of the game. The games other two stars were Flemming (3rd) and Jensen (2nd).

The Majors only have a day to get back on track as they will practice tomorrow before heading out to Kitchener on Friday in a game that will be broadcast on Sportsnet Ontario with the puck drop at 7:08 PM. The team then returns home for a game against the Niagara IceDogs this Sunday at 2:00 PM, before facing Kitchener again on Monday afternoon in the team's annual Family Day game. Puck drop is 2:00 PM and kids who come out early will have a chance to meet Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants in a special meet and greet from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. Tickets are available at the Hershey Centre box office.

MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are also on sale now. Ticket packages begin at just $495.00 for the entire tournament. Packages can be purchased by visiting ticketmaster.ca or calling 905-502-7788 x. 1.
