Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Syracuse, NY - Heading into his Father's Day start at Alliance Bank Stadium vs. the Syracuse Chiefs (32-37), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (40-30) starter Ramon Ortiz had not allowed more than three runs in any of his previous six starts dating back to May 11th. The right-hander tossed 7 2/3 innings of two-run baseball leading the Yankees to a 6-2 victory in the series finale against the Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.

The Yankees jumped on Chiefs starter Tanner Roark in the bottom of the first inning sending eight men to the plate and picking up eight runs. Chris Dickerson got the rally started with a bat handle flip over the head of the drawn in third baseman Jarret Hoffpauir. Dickerson turned the bloop single into a hustle double and then moved to third when Hoffpauir's throw was wild to second. Corban Joseph knocked in the first SWB run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Ronnier Mustelier started the second wave of hits off Roark in the first with a double to left. Mustelier scored on the 40th RBI of the season by Yankees DH Jack Cust and the score moved to 2-0. The third and final run of the inning came off of a laser double to right field off the bat of Francsisco Cervelli, which plated Jack Cust, swelling the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 3-0.

Corban Joseph added a big insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth inning with a solo blast over the right-centerfield wall. Joseph's fifth home run of the year gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the 4-0 advantage, while Ortiz continued to cruise on the bump for the Yankees. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasn't done yet, as they added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With nobody out in the inning, Colin Curtis roped a triple down the right field line, allowing Cervelli to score from second after doubling earlier in the inning. Ramiro Pens then brought Curtis home when he hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, extending the Yankee lead to 6-0 after six innings.

Brett Carroll ended Ortiz's consecutive batters retired streak at 19, when he crushed a solo home run over the left-centerfield wall with two outs in the top half of the seventh inning. Carroll's fourth home run and 19th RBI brought the Chiefs to within 6-1. Syracuse added another run as Xavier Paul came all the way home from first on a high fly ball to short left field, which dropped in for a double off the bat of Carlos Rivero.

With the win, Ortiz improved to 6-3 on the season. The veteran right-hander allowed just four hits, while striking out one and walking two. Roark suffered the loss for the Chiefs falling to 3-9 on the season. He allowed six runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight and walking none. Manny Delcarmen and Justin Thomas combined for the final four outs, shutting the door on the Chiefs.

Following Sunday's season finale with the Chiefs, the Yankees travel to Louisville to begin an eight game road trip over the next eight days. The trip opens with a 7:05 game on Monday evening. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sends right-hander John Maine (1-0, 6.00) to the hill for his first start (second appearance) as a Yankee, while the Bats counter with fellow right-hander Sean Gallagher (5-4, 5.15).
