Orlando Apollos News Release
TODAY'S NEWS
Wednesday's practice was the first in full pads for The Orlando Apollos at training camp - previous practices had the players in only helmets and shells. Winter reared its head in San Antonio for a milder, windier morning than the team had experienced in Texas so far. A high-intensity morning practice session was followed by an afternoon walkthrough at the University of the Incarnate Word.
RAMPED-UP INTENSITY: With the first full-contact practice of training camp came another level of intensity on both sides of the football. On Wednesday it was the defense that predominantly had the upper-hand - Of the defense, head coach Steve Spurrier said, "They did some good stuff, Coach (Bob) Sanders, Coach (Jim) Collins, all those coaches over there are doing a super job."
ORLANDO HOMECOMING: Defensive back Mark Myers Jr. is one of three players on The Apollos roster who will play professional football in their hometown starting this February. The Oak Ridge High School and Southeastern University product will take aim with The Apollos after spending time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this year.
RB POSITION UP FOR GRABS: There are six players competing for roster spots at running back for The Apollos. Coach Spurrier noted on Wednesday that Purdue product Akeem Hunt is the fastest running back on the roster - Hunt earned playing time in the NFL for both the Houston Texans (2015-16) and Kansas City Chiefs (2017). Other intriguing all-purpose backs include South Florida's D'Ernest Johnson, the Bulls' all-time leader in all-purpose yards (4,186) and receptions by a running back (73), and Washington State alum Jamal Morrow, who ranks first in school history for career receptions by a running back (202) and third in all-purpose yards (4,219).
The Apollos signed offensive tackle Ronald Patrick (South Carolina) to the active roster and placed linebacker Ronald Powell (Florida) on waived/injured.
The Orlando Apollos team headquarters while in training camp in San Antonio is the University of the Incarnate Word.
The Apollos are allocated players who went to college in the state of Florida - for a complete breakdown of the roster by college, check the Training Camp Report tab on the Apollos media website.
A member of The Alliance of American Football, The Orlando Apollos are led by an experienced professional coaching, playing and front office staff featuring head coach Steve Spurrier, team president Mike Waddell and general manager Tim Ruskell.
The Apollos compete in The Alliance of American Football with The Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Arizona Hotshots, Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders and San Diego Fleet. The name Orlando Apollos is inspired by Apollo, Greek god of the sun, who is often depicted as an archer. The Apollos' colors are derived from two shades of orange which are reflective of the warm Florida sunshine that is common to Orlando and central Florida, and the color navy also pays respect to the Apollo Space mission and the entire Florida Space Coast. The Apollos' arrow points east toward Florida.
Orlando Apollos' home games will be played at Spectrum Stadium. Fans can purchase season tickets for as low as $75 at www.orlandoapollos.com or by calling 833-AAF-2019.
