
O'Reilly Makes the Grade

Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, announced today that Erie Otters forward Ryan O'Reilly was one of the 22 players who will represent Canada's National Men's Summer Under-18 Team at the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament. O'Reilly is one of eight Ontario Hockey League players on the Canadian roster for the event being held from August 12-16th in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic. The roster was finalized during Hockey Canada's four-day camp at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary. Canada, who has won the tournament three of the past four years, will play in Group B with Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. Group A includes the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and the US. Canada will face the United States in Trnava, Slovakia on August 9th and Canada's second and final exhibition game will be versus Czech Republic on August 10th in Breclav, Czech Republic. The 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament begins on August 12th with Canada facing Switzerland. O'Reilly, the first overall pick in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection, had 19 goals and 33 assists for 52 points in 61 games in 2007-08.
Advance tickets are now available at the Otters Office (809 French Street) for the Erie Otters Jason Baird Benefit being held Tuesday, August 19th from 7-9 at the Warner Theatre. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under) and includes a chance to win great hockey memorabilia door prizes. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Baird Family to assist in his mounting medical costs. For those unable to attend the Baird Benefit, PNC Bank is accepting donations to the Erie Otters Jason Baird Benefit Fund at any of their area locations. Baird, a member of the Otters from 1997-2001, suffered severe burns to more than 60 percent of his body in a landscaping accident July 17th in Austintown, Ohio. The 27 year-old from Cayuga, Ontario is receiving treatment at the Akron Burn Center. National Hockey League players and Otters Alumni Members Mike Rupp (New Jersey Devils), Tim Connolly (Buffalo Sabres) and Steve Valiquette (New York Rangers) as well as former Otters goaltender Adam Munro have all confirmed their attendance at the fundraiser. Additional NHL Players and Otters Alumni Members are expected to join the event as it draws closer.
