Orangeville Can't Slow Saint John, Lose 116-111

March 19, 2016 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) - Orangeville A's News Release

Despite a whopping 22 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists from A's forward Flen Whitfield, the Orangeville A's were unable to shut down the Saint John Mill Rats, losing 116-111 after 48 minutes. The Mill Rats were boosted by the scoring efforts of Doug Herring Jr., who finished the game with a game high 26 points along with 9 assists.

The Orangeville A's (8-18) played their second consecutive home game in two nights, hosting the Saint John Mill Rats (16-10) for the first and only time of the NBLC regular season. The A's were forced to play tonight's game with an injury depleted roster for yet another night, after only having 8 active players on the roster in last nights OT loss to the Halifax Hurricanes (126-121).

Tonight's game kicked off with a quick scoring run by the A's, taking a 7-0 lead at the 9:17 mark of the 1st quarter. Both squads struggled with inefficiency in the 1st, seeing Orangeville shoot 31% from the field while Saint John only went 40% respectively. The 1st would prove to be a low scoring affair for both teams, eventually concluding with a 5 point Mill Rats lead of 26-21.

The 2nd would prove to be all Orangeville, who maintained a lead over the Mill Rats for nearly all of the quarter. At the 1:14 mark of the 2nd quarter, A's guard Dominic Cheek gifted an easy alley-oop pass to Flen Whitfield, who threw down a one-handed dunk over the Mill Rat's defence stretching the A's lead to 15 points. The 1st half would finish with a 52-39 Orangeville lead over the Saint John Mill Rats, seeing both teams only shoot a combined 24% (10/42) from 3PT after 24 minutes.

The Mill Rats would take over the game in the 3rd, going on a 27-6 scoring run to open up the quarter. The A's could not find a way to slow down Mill Rats forward Gabe Freeman, who put up 12 out of his 23 points on the night during the 3rd quarter alone. After getting outscored 46-26 in the 3rd quarter, the A's needed to find a way to slow down the Saint John attack.

Both squads fought hard in the 4th quarter, seeing the A's come within only 3 points at the 1:16 mark of the 4th, down 109-106 to the Mill Rats. The A's were unable to close the deficit in the late moments of the game, before eventually falling to the Mill Rats 116-111 after 48 minutes.

Key Game Notes:

The A's managed to have another 3 players reach over 20 points in scoring, with Munks (22), Moss (21) and Cheek (20) all breaking the 20 point threshold

Tonight marks the second consecutive game that A's guard Da'Quan Brooks has reached the double digit mark for assists, after collecting 15 tonight and 15 last night.
