May 17, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers are preparing for one last workout session today, 4:00 PM, at Foothills Stadium before heading to Arizona tomorrow to open up the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on Wednesday. Currently the Vipers have 27 players still in camp with only 22 spots available on the opening night roster. Included amongst the hopefuls is 23-year-old Veteran, Alberta native Brant Stickel who recently finished playing with the University of Calgary Dinos baseball club. The left-handed hitter and thrower led the Canadian College Baseball Conference as both the strikeout king with 61 and also run producer with 25 runs batted in. The 6'4" 210 pound Stickel comes from hockey bloodlines as he is cousins with National Hockey League players Shane Doan and Carey Price.

The Vipers start the 2010 GBL season on Wednesday May 19th at 7:30 PM MDT in Yuma against the Scorpions. After four games in Yuma the team will wrap up the seven game road trip in Tucson, Arizona against the Toros.

Opening Day is scheduled for May 27th at Foothills Stadium with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.

Tickets are currently on sale at the Vipers' office (2255 Crowchild Trail NW), you can also call 403-277-2255 or visit the Calgary Vipers' website: www.calgaryvipers.com .
