One Call Away
January 13, 2003 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
"At this level you're always one call away. You never know if the scouts are coming in to look at you or the other guy. If the other guy comes in here and gets 30 and you get 15, guess who's going??I knew that whether I was going to be out there five minutes or 40 minutes that he wasn't going to score on me."
- Fayetteville Patriots and former San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Brown on his matchup with NBDL November Player of the Month Jeff Trepagnier last Friday night in Fayetteville. Brown scored 20 while limiting Trepagnier to seven points in the game.
Bouncing Back on the Record
After losing by 15 points on the road at Fayetteville on Friday, the Asheville Altitude responded by setting a pair of team records in a resounding 106-82 victory over the Patriots in Asheville on Saturday. The Altitude's total of 106 points was a new team standard, as was a .609 (39-64) shooting night from the floor. Asheville point guard Eddie Gill had a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists in the game.
Dazzle's Star Rising
The Roanoke Dazzle has the NBDL's longest current winning streak at four games, enabling Kent Davison's club to climb to fifth in the current league standings at 11-11. The Dazzle is one-half game out of second place.
Hot Hand
Greenville guard Donald Hand has made his last 35 consecutive free throw attempts. Hand has not missed a free throw attempt since the third quarter of a Dec. 22 game against Columbus. He is 102-for-121 on the season, good for an .843 percentage, sixth in the league. His 102 free throws made and 121 attempts both lead the NBDL.
Another Four-Game Streak
Roanoke doesn't have dibs on current NBDL four-game streaks however. Mobile has won four consecutive against the Columbus Riverdragons. The Riverdragons will be looking to reverse that trend when coach Jeff Malone's team travels to the Mardi Gras Dome in Mobile Tuesday for a 7 p.m. CT tipoff.
Celebrating MLK Day
The NBDL will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with more than just a trio of games on Jan. 20. The Columbus Riverdragons are celebrating with the Alpha Club, which will bring a shortened version of the play "Coretta: The Other Side of the Dream" for fans to enjoy at halftime of the game. The Mobile Revelers are sponsoring an essay contest to celebrate and will also erect a mural at courtside where all fans will be encouraged to write, paint or draw what peace means to them. The Asheville Altitude will host a Read to Achieve and will participate in Asheville's Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.
The Cornell Climb
North Charleston center Peter Cornell played in his 11th game for the North Charleston Lowgators over the weekend, finally making him eligible to be included in the NBDL league leader statistics, and show up he has. Cornell is currently third in the league in field goal percentage at .557 (44-79) and seventh in the league in rebounding with 7.0 per game. Cornell added an exclamation point to his presence by scoring 10 points, collecting nine rebounds and blocking three shots in the Lowgators 83-81 win over Huntsville Saturday night.
Welcome Back Gabe
Gabe Muoneke has announced his return to the NBDL with an exclamation point. An honorable mention All-NBDL selection after averaging 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds for the Columbus Riverdragons last year, the former Texas Longhorn has averaged 18.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in the three games he has played since being acquired by the Roanoke Dazzle.
Green Piece of Columbus Record
Point guard Nate Green tied a Columbus single-game record with five three pointers in the Riverdragons win over Greenville Saturday at the Columbus Civic Center. The Indiana State product is in his second tour of NBDL duty, having played with the North Charleston Lowgators last season. Green was a final cut of the Indiana Pacers this season.
Leading All Categories
Columbus' Tang Hamilton leads all three NBDL rebounding categories, averaging 3.0 offensive rebounds, 6.4 defensive rebounds and 9.478 total rebounds per game. Hamilton also leads the NBDL with 11 double-doubles.
Can I Help You With That?
Roanoke's Cory Alexander is easily leading the NBDL in assists. His total of 124 is 16 assists more than the next highest assist man, Omar Cook of Fayetteville. Cook, who averages playing just 21 minutes per game, has 108 total assists.
