Published on January 13, 2003 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C. (January 13, 2003) - North Charleston forward Damone Brown will sign a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, the NBA team announced today, making him the sixth National Basketball Development League player to be "called-up" this season.
Brown is the second NBDL player called up to the Raptors in the last five days. Mobile guard Rafer Alston signed a 10-day contract with the team on Jan. 8. Brown is the 14th NBDL player to sign a NBA contract since the league began play in mid-November 2001, and the fourth in the last 21 days.
Brown is the first North Charleston player to get a callup from the NBA.. Every NBDL team has now had at least one player called up since the league began play in November 2001.
Additional 2002-03 NBDL-to-NBA call ups include Huntsville guard Mike Wilks to the Atlanta Hawks, Mobile forward Bobby Simmons to the Washington Wizards, Roanoke center Mikki Moore to the Boston Celtics, Fayetteville guard Devin Brown to the San Antonio Spurs and Alston.
Brown, 6-foot-9, 200 pounds, averaged 14.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 28.9 minutes in 23 games with the Lowgators. He recorded a season-high 31 points against Huntsville on Dec. 20 and collected a season-best 11 rebounds in two different NBDL games.
A second-round draft choice (37th overall) by Philadelphia in the 2001 NBA Draft, Brown averaged 1.4 points in 17 games with the 76ers during the 2001-02 season. He had a career-high eight points against Indiana on April 17, 2002.
Brown will join the Raptors in Washington for Tuesday's game against the Wizards. The Raptors are allowed to add Brown after being granted a special hardship because both guard Lindsey Hunter (sore right hamstring) and forward Chris Jefferies (lower back, disc) did not accompany the team to Washington for the game.
Per NBA rules, each team must dress a minimum of eight players for a game, and Brown's addition to tomorrow's lineup will bring the Raptors up to that mark.
A 2001 product of Syracuse University, Brown earned Second Team All-Big East honors as a senior. He averaged 10.9 points, 6.0 rebounds and 25.8 minutes in 113 career games for the Orangemen.
Both Hunter and Jefferies remain on Toronto's active roster. Also injured and on the active roster are forward Michael Bradley (lower back disc), guard/forward Vince Carter (strained right knee), center Nate Huffman (swollen right knee), guard Voshon Lenard (moderate left ankle sprain) and center Mamadou N'diaye (stress fracture, right heel).
Forward Lamond Murray (Lisfranc ligament tear, right midfoot), and centers Eric Montross (stress reaction, left foot) and Hakeem Olajuwon (lower back) are on the Raptors injured list.
