On Fire: Smokin' Joe Grills Hogs
March 6, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kansas City Outlaws News Release
After Thursday night's painful 4-2 loss to the Rockford IceHogs, it was a sure bet the Kansas City Outlaws would come out angry. Angry they were, but more importantly- they had their game on. Despite falling behind in the first period, Outlaw leading scorer Smokin' Joe Seroski led his mates to a 4-3 victory at Kemper Arena today.
The IceHogs drew first blood on a power play goal by J. C. Ruid just 5:54 into the first period. With Derek Kern in the penalty box for slashing, Ruid took the feed from Jean-Francois Dufour and Chris Gobert to beat Maxime Gingras for the 1-0 lead.
Ruid returned the favor, assisting- along with Alex Kim- on Dufour's goal with 4:04 remaining in the first frame. At the intermission, Rockford was on top 2-0.
The Kemper faithful had reason for hope, as this Outlaws team is the same one that scored 5 third-period goals against Rockford back on February 19th.
The Kansas City blueliners stepped up big in the second period. Dan Rohanna scored just his 2nd goal as an Outlaw (click for video), with an assist from fellow defenseman Vaclav Zavoral, at 3:11. From that point on, it was all about Smokin' Joe.
Seroski took advantage of an Outlaw power play (click for video), scoring his first of the day at the 6:13 mark (Jami Yoder, Matthieu Descoteaux). The second period ended with the game tied at 2-2.
Another power play tally by Joe Seroski at 8:16 of the third period (Descoteaux, Mark Lee) gave Kansas City the 3-2 lead (click for video). He also picked up an unassisted goal with 9:10 remaining for the true hat trick (click for video). Seroski's trey gives him 33 goals for the season, and four hat tricks on the year.
The Hogs sparked back to life briefly, picking up a final goal at 16:55 of the final period, but Kansas City hung on to win 4-3.
The Outlaws will take to the road later this week, playing at Fort Wayne this Friday night and Quad City one week from today.
