Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (53-56) moved into sole possession of first place in the American Northern Division with a 4-1 win over the Nashville Sounds (38-71), with the Memphis Redbirds yet to play tonight in Round Rock. The win was the fourth straight home victory for the Chasers, a season high, and also matches the longest overall winning streak of the season.
Left-hander Danny Duffy did not factor into the decision on the day but allowed only two hits and no runs to the Sounds over five innings, while matching a Triple-A season high with seven strikeouts. Duffy has three scoreless outings of five innings or more for Omaha this season in his nine appearances, and has given up eight runs in his last 32.0 innings (2.25 ERA) while recording 30 strikeouts during that span.
The Storm Chasers scored their first run of the day on a two-out RBI single by Ben Broussard in the first inning, his fourth RBI of the series, but could not string together more than one hit in any of the next five innings. After the Sounds tied the game in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI of their own by catcher Anderson De La Rosa, Omaha batted around in the bottom of the inning to plate three runs. Christian Colon and Max Ramirez hit back-to-back bases loaded RBI singles, and catcher Manuel Pina worked a two-out bases loaded walk to cap the rally.
Relievers Francisley Bueno and Donnie Joseph closed out the final four innings while recording six strikeouts, although Joseph did walk the bases loaded in the top of the ninth only to strike out Josh Prince, who represented the go-ahead run, to seal the victory. Omaha has a league-leading 890 strikeouts as a team this season, and are currently on pace to set a new team strikeouts record (the current record was set last season at 1,082).
Irving Falu notched two hits on the day, and with his eighth inning single he tied Rondin Johnson (1984-88) for second place in Omaha history with the 599th hit in his 548-game career with the O-Royals/Storm Chasers. With his next hit Falu will become only the second player in team history to reach 600 hits, with franchise leader Jed Hansen sitting at 662 hits.
The Storm Chasers have won six of seven games at Werner Park against Nashville in 2013, and will look for their first series sweep of the season tomorrow night. Left-hander Justin Marks (4-10, 5.40) will take the mound for Omaha, and will face off with veteran lefty Aaron Laffey (0-2, 5.40). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
