Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - In a back-and-forth affair, the Omaha Lancers came up short in the final game of a four game homestand, succumbing to the Waterloo Black Hawks by a final score of 5-3 at Ralston Arena on Friday. With the loss, the Lancers fell to 20-4-2 overall this season, but with 42 points, still remain alone atop the Western Conference and overall USHL standings. The loss halted Omaha's season-long six-game winning streak and was Omaha's third straight defeat at the hands of the Black Hawks this year.
Looking sharp from the outset, the Black Hawks stormed to a 3-0 lead in the first period, thanks to an early goal from former Lancer Drew Melanson at 3:35, assisted by Brandon Montour and Zach Sanford, and a pair of Tyler Sheehy tallies late in the frame, set up by Sanford and Hayden Shaw respectively with Melanson picking up secondary helpers on both markers.
In a wild second period, Omaha whittled the lead to 3-1 at 10:56 when Louie "The Sheriff" Rowe stuffed home his second score of the season, a five-hole slipper on a two-on-one feed from Jake "The Deputy" Henderson. After a Patrick Russell power-play goal at 13:46, a wild, turning, one-time crank from the top of his offensive zone resulted in rookie Lancers forward Zach Jordan's first-career USHL goal, a tally that drew Omaha within a pair at 18:01, leaving the Lancers down 4-2 after 40 minutes.
Trailing entering the final stanza, the Lancers made things exceedingly interesting in the third, as a near superhuman wraparound from Tyler Vesel at 3:48, set up by Jake Randolph and Tucker Poolman, drew Omaha within a goal at 4-3, but a late power-play score for Waterloo's Brandon Montour at 15:44 sealed the statement 5-3 road win for the Black Hawks.
Next up for the Lancers, it's the final game before the Holiday break, a 7:05 pm puck drop at the Lincoln Icebox Arena on Saturday vs. the Lincoln Stars. Full coverage of Saturday's game begins with the "Valpak Pregame Show" at 6:50 pm on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL. Season ticket packages for the Lancers' second campaign at the state-of-the-art Ralston Arena are available now starting at just $12.50 per game!
