August 10, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Sacramento Mountain Lions News Release

Sacramento, CA - WEDNESDAY, August 10, 2011 - The United Football League will operate a four-team format when the Las Vegas Locos, Omaha Nighthawks, Sacramento Mountain Lions and Virginia Destroyers kick off the 2011 UFL season on September 15 and 17.

Omaha and Sacramento will host season-opening games when the Nighthawks debut at their new TD Ameritrade Park home in Omaha against the Virginia Destroyers on Thursday, September 15, and the Mountain Lions face the two-time reigning-champion Locos at Hornet Stadium on Saturday, September 17.

The full 2011 UFL season schedule will be announced next week. Games will be aired through a combination of broadcasts on HDNet and regional sports networks.

The UFL has suspended operations in Hartford, Connecticut, where the Hartford Colonials played the 2010 season at the city's Rentschler Field stadium. Colonials players will join the other four UFL teams through an allocation draft to be held on Monday, August 15, while head coach Jerry Glanville will assume a new role as a consultant to the league.

"We are moving forward as projected having revised our strategy and realigned the make up of the United Football League," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "We are disappointed to have suspended operations in Hartford and are grateful to the Colonials fans for their support. We have not closed the door on Hartford and will review the viability of returning to the city at the end of this season.

"We hope that football fans in Omaha and Sacramento are excited to learn that their teams are hosting the first games of the new season and look forward to a great atmosphere in those venues when the games kick off next month.

"The September 15 start date will allow teams to retrieve players who are in NFL camps, but do not make final rosters. Our shorter season will allow players to pursue their dream of making an impact in the NFL by joining teams earlier in the process once the UFL season has concluded."

Players will report to training camps being held during the week of August 22 in Las Vegas, Omaha, Sacramento and Virginia to prepare for the third UFL season.

The opening game in Omaha will mark the UFL coaching debut of both NFL veteran head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER of the Virginia Destroyers and Nighthawks head coach JOE MOGLIA. The September 17 match up in Sacramento pits DENNIS GREEN and his Mountain Lions against the most successful coach in UFL history JIM FASSEL and the two-time champion Las Vegas Locos.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to get our football team out on the field and give fans something to shout about," Fassel said. "In a short season like this every game counts and all four teams will be eager to start positively. Our players are ready to get back and bring high quality football and some fun to the UFL community."
