
Oklahoma Storm Takes Carter With First Pick In Draft

ENID, OK--The Oklahoma Storm went with Sooner State ties when it came to selecting players in the 2007 United States Basketball League Draft, held Tuesday night via leaguewide conference call.
Former Oklahoma Sooner swingman Nate Carter was picked with the 10th and final pick of the first round. Former Northwestern Oklahoma State University center Gary Nunez was taken with the ninth selection in the second round. Oklahoma State University's Mario Boggan was taken with the eighth pick in the third round, and former Kingfisher High School star and Tulsa Golden Hurricane forward Charles Ramsdell was picked with the seventh selection in the fourth and final round.
Carter, a 6-6 220-pound swingman, led the Sooners in scoring and rebounding during Big 12 play this season, averaging 16.1 points and 7.1 rebounds during the conference schedule. He also set an OU record by making 37 consecutive free throw attempts and was named to the All Big 12 Third Team.
Nunez, a 6-7 forward, averaged 11 points and six rebounds for the Rangers this season as they earned their way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City.
Boggan, a 6-7 forward, was an All-Big 12 selection in 2007. He led the Cowboys in both scoring, 19 points per game, and rebounding, 7.6 board per game. He played two seasons in Stillwater after transferring from Chipola College in Florida.
With their fourth and final pick the Storm picked former Kingfisher High School star Charles Ramsdell, a 6-10 forward. Ramsdell averaged 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in his senior season at Tulsa. He started all 28 games as a junior and averaged 9 points and a team leading 6.2 rebounds per game. At Kingfisher, he led his team to a three year record of 61-21, including 22-5 his senior year. He was named to All-State teams by both the Tulsa World and the Daily Oklahoman.
"It's important for us to give area players a chance to begin their pro careers." Storm head coach Roy Rogers stated. "These guys will have the opportunity to come in here next week and earn a job for the summer."
The Albany Patroons made Siena forward Michael Haddix the top pick in the USBL draft. The Gary Steelheads picked Gary Richard from the NCAA champion Florida Gators in the second position.
Practice begins this weekend in preparation for the season opener at Jackson, Mississippi on April 22. The home opener at Mark Price Arena is set for April 24 against the Albany Patroons.
