Tulsa Oilers News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO - A new day ended in the same nightmare for the Tulsa Oilers. Just 24 hours after losing to the Missouri Mavericks in their own building, the Oilers fell 5-3 to the Mavs at the Independence Events Center on Saturday night. Tulsa remains winless in seven meetings against Missouri this season and has managed to earn just a single point in its last five games overall (0-4-1).
The Oilers might have thought their fortunes against the Mavs were finally turning around when their first shot of the game went into the net. Rookie forward Adam Pleskach snapped the puck over the blocker shoulder of Shane Owen to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead at the 3:30 mark of the first period. The Oilers lead lasted only six minutes as Colt King chipped in a shot from the side of the Tulsa net at 9:35 to even the score. Six minutes later, King set up Matt Stephenson with a pass from the behind the Tulsa and the Mavericks defenseman rifled a wrist shot through Shane Madolora to give Missouri its first lead of the evening.
Sebastien Thinel's power play goal at 4:48 of the second period pushed the Mavs advantage to 3-1. Pleskach brought the Oilers back within one at 15:24 of the middle frame after jamming a rebound between the pads of Owen for his second goal of the night and his sixth multi-goal outing of the season.
After the Oilers failed to capitalize on a four-minute power play that bled over into the third period, Mavs forward Mike Ramsay finished off a partial breakaway by slipping the puck underneath Madolora to give his side a 4-2 cushion. Evan Vossen's one-timer at 9:59 of the final period gave Missouri extra insurance and despite Drew Fisher's breakaway tally at 12:39, the Mavericks were able to shut the Oilers down and earn the victory.
Oilers center Todd Robinson, tied for the CHL scoring lead with 61 points, skated in warm-ups but did not play in the game due to an injury suffered on Friday night against Missouri. Tulsa finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play while Missouri went 1-for-3 on the man-advantage. Each team fired 28 shots on goal but the Oilers outgunned the Mavericks 22-12 over the final two periods.
Owen improved to 5-0-0 against the Oilers this season while Madolora dropped to 0-5-0 versus the Mavericks.
Tulsa will get six days off before finishing off the month of January with a Friday tilt at Quad City.
