Mississippi RiverKings News Release
TULSA, Oklahoma â Saturday night Tulsa got a strong effort from goalie Rod Branch who stopped 29 of 30 shots, including a penalty shot, to lead the Oilers to a 4-1 win over the visiting Memphis RiverKings. The âKings return home for three games next weekend to close the regular season and tune up for the playoffs. Friday, Memphis hosts the New Mexico Scorpions with all upper bowl tickets just $5. Also water bottles will be given to the first 1,500 fans courtesy of the DeSoto Athletic Club. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center, located just 15 minutes south of downtown Memphis. For tickets call (662) 342-1755 or go online at www.RiverKings.com and use the Ticketmaster link.
Neither team scored in the first period, but Memphis got on the board early in the second. Jay Neal kept the puck in the Tulsa zone and fed it for Jonathan Gagnon who one-timed home his 25th of year just 57 seconds into the period for a 1-0 Memphis lead. The Oilers answered on a weird play when âKings defenseman Derek Landmesser tried to clear the puck out of his own end and accidentally banked it off of Lyle Steenbergen and by startled RiverKings goalie J.F. Racine at 5:40. The Oilers took the lead when Klage Kabel swept in a rebound at 19:16 of the frame to make it 2-1 Tulsa.
In the third period Mike Mohr got loose on a breakaway and made it 3-1 Oilers at 3:32. The âKings had a chance to get back into the game as they were awarded a penalty shot at 14:09 when a Tulsa player closed his hand on the puck in the crease. Kahlil Thomas was called upon for the penalty shot, but Branch stoned him with the glove hand. Less than a minute later the Oilers put the game away when Justin Ossachuk scored on a two-on-one at 15:01. FINAL SCORE Tulsa 4, Memphis 1.
Branch improved his record to 29-17-5 with the win. Racine allowed four goals on 34 shots to drop to 21-9-3. Memphis went 0-2 on the power play while Tulsa went 0-3.
