Published on October 18, 2008 under Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release
The Ontario Hockey League has conducted a review of an incident which occurred in the game of Friday, October 10th, 2008 between the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club and the visiting Owen Sound Attack Hockey Club
The review ensued as the result of a slew footing match penalty being assessed to player Garrett Wilson of the Owen Sound Attack Hockey Club resulting in a serious injury, a broken ankle, to player Dan Kelly of the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club.
The review encompassed the referee's report, the game video for the incident in question and a telephone hearing conducted by the League on Friday, the 17th of October, 2008 involving player Garrett Wilson, General Manager Dale DeGray and Head Coach Mark Reeds of the Owen Sound Attack Hockey Club.
In making his announcement as the result of the review, Commissioner David Branch stated, "in reviewing the video of the incident in question, and as the result of the telephone hearing, the League is persuaded that player Garrett Wilson did not deliberately attempt to injure player Dan Kelly, however, we are of the opinion that the actions of player Wilson resulted in a serious leg injury to player Dan Kelly.
The Ontario Hockey League, as the number on development League in the world, is committed to providing a competitive environment which shall at all times include all players RESPECTING their opponent.
The act of "slew footing" is an action that we must eliminate from our game for the benefit and safety of all players".
As a result of the review, player Garrett Wilson of the Owen Sound Attack Hockey Club is suspended for fifteen (15) games, dating from but not including the game of Friday, October 10th, 2008.
