Offensive Outburst Leads the Way to Game Two Win for Sweets

BEND, Ore- The Walla Walla Sweets (18-14) took down the Bend Elks (12-17) in game two, 11-6. The series is now tied at one game apiece.

The Sweets got out in front with two runs in the first inning on RBIs by Cole Rutherford (Cornell) and Alex Muzzi (Long Beach State).

The Elks answered with a run in the bottom halves of the first and second innings to tie the score at 2-2.

Walla Walla broke the tie in the fifth with a five run inning. Willie MacIver hit an RBI single and then scored on a double by Rutherford. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ryan Johnston (UC Irvine) came off the bench and delivered a bases clearing double to center to put the Sweets up 7-2.

In the sixth inning, Walla Walla tacked on again with a run on a sacrifice fly by Nick Vigo (Cal State Monterey Bay). Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga) launched his first home run of the season to lead-off the seventh to make it 9-2 Walla Walla.

The Elks did not go down without a fight, scoring three in the seventh and one more in the eighth off the Sweets bullpen. With the score at 9-6, the Sweets added some cushion in the ninth on an RBI double by Nyquist and an RBI single by Muzzi.

Easton Lucas picked up the win and improved to 5-1 on the season. He threw six innings of two-run baseball while striking out seven.

The Sweets will send Jackson Weeg (Emory) to the mound tomorrow for the third game of the series. First pitch is slated for 6:35 P.M. at Vince Genna Stadium.
