Offensive Defenseman Comes to Quad Cities

September 13, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Quad City Mallards News Release

Moline, IL-Quad City Mallards Head Coach and General Manager Brian Curran announced today that defenseman Tom Galvin has joined the team for the 2005-06 season. The offensive blueliner will be spending his second pro season in the Quad Cities after playing with the ECHL's Reading Royals in 2004-05.

In his first full season of pro hockey, Galvin recorded 30 points (four goals and 26 assists) in 67 games on the Reading blueline. The 5-foot-9, 185 pound rearguard was the top scoring defenseman on a team that ranked first in the ECHL in goals against, allowing just 2.24 goals per game.

"Tom will bring offensive skill to our defense," said Curran. "He's a player that will benefit greatly from the elimination of the two-line pass, and he will be a big help to our transition game."

Galvin began his pro career by playing two games with the ECHL's Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies in 2003-04. He joined the Bullies after completing his senior season at the University of Notre Dame. The Miller Place, New York native closed out his career by helping the Irish reach the NCAA Hockey Tournament for the first time ever in 2004.

During his four years at Notre Dame, Galvin played 142 collegiate games. He scored 58 points on eight goals and 50 assists. During his sophomore season, Galvin led Notre Dame blueliners in scoring with 23 points (four goals and 19 assists).

Before attending Notre Dame, Galvin played two seasons with the Waterloo Blackhawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In 1999-2000, he was the second highest scoring defenseman in the USHL with 42 points (nine goals and 33 assists) in 58 games. For his efforts, Galvin was named Second Team All-USHL.
