Offense Snaps Scoreless Streak in Win

Salem, VA - Travis Jones provided late-inning insurance with an eighth inning, two-run homer to help lead the Wilmington Blue Rocks (58-56 / 27-17) to a 6-2 victory over the Salem Red Sox (53-59 / 21-23) Wednesday night at Haley Toyota Field. The Blue Rocks snapped their 22 scoreless inning streak in the win as Gerson Garabito (6-6) turned in his fifth straight quality start and allowed just two runs over six innings of work and struck out eight batters to earn the win.

The Blue Rocks erased an early 1-0 deficit after Salem struck for a run in the first inning on an RBI infield single by Josh Tobias. In the second inning with two outs, Rudy Martin ripped a two-out RBI double to right field to score Meibrys Viloria off Salem's starter Kutter Crawford (0-1), who made his Carolina League debut, to tie the game. In the third, Wilmington strung together four straight hits to take its first lead in a game since Saturday. Blake Perkins and D.J. Burt each singled to put runners at first and second. Gabriel Cancel singled down the first base line to plate Perkins and give the Rocks a 2-1 advantage. Emmanuel Rivera followed with a double off the left-center field wall to score Burt to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Rocks tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Rivera reached on a fielding error by Salem's third baseman Tobias with one out. After Daniel Gonzalez struck out Viloria, Jones belted a two-run homer over the left field wall for his second home run as a Blue Rock to pad Wilmington's lead, 5-2. Angelo Castellano launched a solo homer in the ninth inning to cap the scoring, 6-2.

The Blue Rocks and Red Sox will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday, August 9 at Haley Toyota Field. Lefty Daniel Tillo (2-2, 424 ERA) starts for Wilmington while RHP Tanner Houck (6-11, 4.29 ERA) climbs the mound for Salem. Fans can listen to the game as Matt Janus and Cory Nidoh will have the call on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE

The Blue Rocks snapped their longest scoreless innings streak of the season at 22 innings when the Rocks plated a run in the second inning on a two-out RBI double from Rudy Martin. The previous watermark was 12 innings when the Rocks were unable to score a run during that stretch from July 8-9. Martin finished the game with a pair of doubles and the RBI as the Rocks pounded out 12 hits in the win to snap Salem's three-game win streak.

Angelo Castellano clubbed his second home run of the season with a solo blast in the ninth inning. It was his first home run since April 9 which was also at Salem, a span of 90 games for the shortstop. Travis Jones hit his second home run as a Blue Rock in the eighth inning marking the ninth time this season Wilmington has clubbed multiple home runs in a game. The last time the Rocks hit a pair of homers in a game was on July 23 at Frederick in the second game of a doubleheader.
