Offense Slows Down as Bullfrogs Fall to Mallards
June 25, 2016 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The offense was only able to score one run on two hits in the nine inning ballgame against the Mallards. The lack of offense hurt the Bullfrogs as the Mallards came out swinging from the start. The final score was 9-1 in favor of the Mallards. The Bullfrogs drop to 9-16 on the year.
Austin Hancock (Lenoir Rhyne) ran into some trouble in the first inning as the first three batters reached on base hits. Sam Armstrong (Jacksonville) drove in the first run on an RBI double off the right field wall. With runners at second and third and nobody out, Hancock was able to get out of the first inning jam without allowing any more runs to score.
The game would fly by without much action from either team offensively until the fifth inning. A couple of defensive miscues and a clutch two out, two run RBI double by Nate Palace (Valparasio) pushed the lead to three. That was plenty for the Mallards as the Bullfrogs would only be able to plate one run in the ballgame. In the bottom of the sixth, Marcus Shoemaker (Lenoir Rhyne) led off the inning with a walk and was followed by Quincy Nieporte (Florida State) who hit a double off the wall. With runners at second and third and one out, the Bullfrogs would only plate one run as Shoemaker scored on a wild pitch.
The wheels fell off for the Bullfrogs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Mallards plated five runs on four hits and four walks. Zach Jarrett had a two run home run off of Connor Jackson in the top of the sixth. Matt McCarthy (Penn State) would throw the final two innings for the Bullfrogs, giving up one run on three hits.
Hancock took the loss as he falls to 1-3 on the year. The starting pitcher for the Mallards, Frank German, held the Bullfrogs in check as he threw five plus innings allowing one run on two hits. The Mallards bullpen held the Bullfrogs hitless in three plus innings of work.
A newcomer, Stephan Poplin (Southern Union State CC), will get his first start in a Bullfrogs uniform. The lefty arrived last night and looks to fill a hole in the starting rotation since the departure of Mike Ellenbest (Blue Jays).
Game time is 4:05pm.
