TAMPA - After scoring 12 runs on 15 hits on Tuesday, the Tampa Yankees (22-24, 56-60) were held without a run on five hits in a 1-0 loss to the Brevard County Manatees (19-25, 48-65-1) on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-5) tossed seven scoreless frames, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out four in the win for Brevard County. RHP Preston Gainey tossed the final two innings, earning his sixth save.
The teams combined for eight hits in the first two innings before the bats fell silent for both teams.
Abiatal Avelino hit a leadoff single in the first but was caught stealing. One out later, Mike Ford singled into left. Miguel Andujar followed with a base hit down the left field line, but the inning ended as Ford was thrown out at third base by left-fielder Jose Pena.
Garrett Cooper and Robinzon Diaz hit back-to-back singles to begin the second for the Manatees. One out later, Dustin Houle knocked in Cooper with a single to left, giving Brevard County the only run needed to win the game.
LHP Chaz Hebert (6-6) retired the final seven batters he faced in six quality innings pitched. The southpaw allowed one run on seven hits, striking out three while not issuing a walk.
Tampa placed the tying run on third base in the bottom of the ninth against Gainey. Avelino reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on an errant pickoff throw by the catcher Houle. Andujar crushed a deep fly out to center for the final out.
