Offense Explodes as RailCats End Skid

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The RailCats offense slugged out 14 runs on 16 hits to snap their seven-game losing skid in a 14-9 win over the Explorers on Independence Day.

The hit parade began in the first inning, as Mike Massaro and Mike Coles hit back-to-back doubles to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead. The Explorers scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning off of RailCats starter Kyle Wilson to take a 2-1 advantage.

The RailCats came right back in the second inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk by Adam Klein and a sac fly by Massaro. The X's answered with three in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead.

Mike Rohde hit an RBI double in the third to pull the RailCats to within 5-4. The 'Cats took the lead for good on Sean Henry's three-run homer in the fourth inning that gave them a 7-5 lead. It was Henry's first homer as a RailCat, and he finished the night with four RBI.

Massaro and Coles had RBI hits in the seventh and a throwing error by catcher Ray Serrano brought home in a third run in the inning as they took an 11-6 lead. The Explorers scored three in the bottom of the inning to pull within two.

The RailCats tacked on insurance in the top of the ninth, as Coles hit a two-run single and Henry added a run-scoring hit. Coles was 4-for-4 with 4 RBI and Massaro was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Adam Klein also drove in a pair of runs for the RailCats.

Rookie pitcher Tyler Deetjen (1-1) out of Valparaiso University picked up his first professional win, allowing a run in three innings of relief.

The win also ended a 10-game losing streak for the 'Cats against Sioux City dating back to July 11, 2011. The series continues on Thursday night at 7:05. Will Krout (0-2, 3.82) will start for the RailCats.
