St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 4, 2012) - Justin Verlander had an incredible season in 2011 winning 24 games. As great of a season as that was it pales in comparison to the last man to win 30 games, Denny McLain, who recorded 31 back in 1968. McLain will appear at the July 5 Saints game to sign his book "I Told You I Wasn't Perfect," throw out a ceremonial first pitch and take photos with fans.
The 68-year-old McLain's 30 wins is something only 13 other players have accomplished in the 20th century. His incredible 1968 season earned him the American League Cy Young and MVP Awards with the Detroit Tigers. He went 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA and became the first pitcher since Dizzy Dean in 1934 to win 30 games. McLain helped guide the Tigers to the World Series title that same season. In 1969 he went 24-9 with a 2.80 and earned his second consecutive Cy Young Award.
The three time All-Star enjoyed a 10-year Major League career in which he spent time with the Tigers (1963-70), Washington Senators ('71), Oakland Athletics ('72) and Atlanta Braves ('72). He finished his career 131-91 with a 3.39 ERA and 1,282 career strikeouts.
The Saints take on the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m. on July 5. All autographs and photos with McLain are free with the purchase of a Saints ticket. Tickets for Saints home games are $5 for general admission, $8 for outfield reserved and $12 for infield reserved. Tickets purchased on the Day of the Game are an additional $1 per ticket. Children under the age of 14 and seniors 65 and older receive $1 off the admission price. Children under 2 that don't require a seat are free. Tickets are available by contacting the Saints ticket office at 651-644-6659 or visiting saintsbaseball.com.
