January 16, 2024 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
Orange County SC is pleased to announce the signing of defender Charlie Asensio for the 2024 season. Asensio most recently appeared for Austin FC II and has ten caps at various levels of the United States Youth National Teams.
The 23-year-old Roswell, GA native completed his second professional season with Austin FC II. He also was named to Austin FC's CONCACAF Champions League roster for one match. Asensio made 24 appearances and played 1,805 minutes for the Verde and Black, while helping lead the team to a MLS Next Pro Playoff Championship.
"I am so excited to be joining this amazing club and am very grateful for the opportunity," Asensio said. "The team had a very successful season last year and I look forward to contributing in any way possible to even more success this upcoming year. I can't wait to play in front of this incredible fanbase and bring them home a trophy!"
Prior to his time in Austin, Asensio played one season previously in the USL Championship with the Charleston Battery in 2022. He tallied two assists in just under 1,100 minutes with Charleston in 15 appearances in his first professional season.
"We are excited to add Charlie to the squad. He is a player who is very comfortable in possession and looks to be progressive with the ball from deeper areas, all qualities we wanted to add to the group this season. His technical abilities will provide healthy competition within our backline in 2024."
Before turning professional, Asensio came up through the Atlanta United academy like fellow new teammates Ben Barjolo and Bryce Jamison. Asensio played his collegiate career at Clemson University for four seasons. He provided nine assists in 82 appearances for the Tigers, and was named to the ACC All-Freshman team in 2018, All-ACC Second Team in 2019 and helped lead Clemson to a NCAA College Cup title in 2021. He has also appeared 10 times at various levels for the USYNT, most recently making three caps for the USMNT U-19 squad under Tab Ramos.
