OC Flyers Home Opener June 13

June 12, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release

FULLERTON, Calif. - The new star of the 2007 Orange County Flyers doesn't carry a bat; he carries a plunger. James Denton, star of the ABC series "Desperate Housewives" and Flyers co-owner, will be on hand to celebrate the Flyers 2007 home opener.

Opening Night - Wed., June 13, 7:05 p.m. - will be kicked off this year by 710 ESPN personalities Steve Mason and John Ireland, with Mason singing the National Anthem and Ireland throwing out the first pitch. In addition, Denton will also be filming a public service announcement for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life prior to the game. The first 2,500 fans will also receive free magnetic schedules for the 2007 season.

The Flyers changed their name from the Fullerton Flyers to the Orange County Flyers when they were purchased in March by a local ownership group headed by team President Alan Mintz and highlighted by Denton. Since purchasing the team from the league in March, Mr. Mintz says his principle objective for the team, outside of living out his own fantasy, has been to "put an exciting and winning team on the field and provide family entertainment at affordable prices. Our promise to every fan attending our games is to make their experience enjoyable, affordable and memorable."

To compliment the many changes to the Flyers this season, Ed Hart returns for his third year as the Flyers general manager. Said Hart, "It's hard to believe we are in our third season together." Also returning to the Flyers for his third year is manager and MLB veteran Garry Templeton. Templeton was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round of the 1974 amateur draft and went on to play 16 seasons of major league baseball.

Returning to the field for the Flyers is all-star Peanut Williams, the 2006 GBL MVP. Williams is looking to continue his success from 2006 where he hit 20 HR, 75 RBI, with a .308 batting average and .548 slugging percentage. The hard-hitting Williams is joined by Flyers veterans Buddy Morales and Garry Templeton II, as well as 2006 all-stars Rich Pohle and Bret Levier.

The biggest new star this year, however, is Denton as co-owner. "With the addition of Jamie [Denton] to the ownership group, it brings more attention and credibility to our organization," says Hart. "Not only does he bring national exposure to our team, but he also brings a great marketing mind as well. Many of the new, fun things we are doing this season here in Orange County are a result of his input and ideas. He has a great baseball mind and is a very classy guy." In addition to being attendance for opening night, the Flyers will be celebrating James Denton night on August 11, where they will be giving out James Denton bobble heads to the first 1,000 fans in attendance. Also Denton's band, Band From TV, will be playing a post-game concert on July 21.
