Oakland Roots Supports Young Women's Freedom Center Through the Justice Fund
February 11, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
In 2020 the Oakland Roots created the Justice Fund - a charitable fund to support causes at the intersection of race and gender justice. With the support and guidance of our partners at the East Bay Community Foundation, last month we started to make our first grants to local non-profit organizations and we'll be featuring them here as we grow.
Oakland Roots is proud to support the Young Women's Freedom Center (YWFC), a leadership and advocacy organization led by systems-involved young and adult women and transgender gender non-conforming (TGNC) people of color who have grown up in poverty, worked in the underground street economy, and have been criminalized by social services such as foster care, welfare, and the mental health systems.
This month, Young Women's Freedom Center's Freedom Research Institute released a new report lifting up the voices and expertise of system-impacted young people and exploring their vision for a healthier future.
Through their Eyes is a call to listen to the wisdom of young people who have had to navigate our failures and the tremendous harm we have caused. Their bravery and honesty encourage us to dig deeper in our work and to make the changes needed to build a healthier future for all.
We are proud to lend our support to the important work of Young Women's Freedom Center.
