San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Another in a long list of former San Jose State University Spartans has joined the San Jose SaberCats Arena Football League team as receiver RUFUS SKILLERN has agreed to a one-year contract, the club announced today.

"San Jose State has produced some talented football players and young men over the years," said SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet. "And we've been fortunate enough to benefit from that."

A five-year member of the SJSU program, Skillern (6-1, 190) progressed rapidly through the system to become the team's leading receiving in each of his last two seasons. As a senior in 2005, the former Skyline High School product collected 36 catches for 561 yards and a career-best six touchdowns. He also tossed a 53-yard scoring pass on his lone collegiate pass attempt.

Skillern had a breakout campaign in 2004 posting 40 receptions for 588 yards and four scores to earn second-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors. He was also the only Spartan to have two 100-yard receiving games.

Signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 12, 2006, Skillern attended training camp and played during the preseason.

He joins SJSU teammate QB Scott Rislov as former Spartans to sign with the SaberCats this off season.

A premier franchise in the AFL, San Jose has captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade. Season tickets for the SaberCats 13th season in the AFL, which begins next February, are available now by calling (408) 573-5577.
