Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (April 27, 2015) - Tim Brown has suited up for three different teams in the American Association during his six year professional baseball career. All three of those organizations, the Lincoln Saltdogs, Grand Prairie AirHogs, and Wichita Wingnuts have won championships while Brown was on their roster. Whether it is coincidence, the right-handed pitcher is a good luck charm, or he is simply that impactful on a club's starting rotation, he has clearly become a valuable commodity within the league. On Monday, the Wingnuts announced that Brown had re-signed with the club, joining Anthony Capra and Jason Van Skike as returning rotation members from the league's top pitching staff last year.
With his up-tempo pitching style and incessant pounding of the strike zone, Brown was one of the most efficient pitchers in the league. He went 10-4 with a 3.12 ERA and issued just 19 walks in 129.2 innings. He was at the top of the class among American Association pitchers in each category, finishing third in ERA, tied for fifth in wins, and eighth in innings. By the time the playoffs rolled around, Brown had earned the honor of pitching the opening game of each series. He won both of his post-season starts, limiting Laredo to a pair of runs in 7.0 innings in the Division Series and then shutting out Lincoln for 7.0 innings to begin the Championship Series.
The 28-year old was not drafted after finishing his collegiate career at Pittsburg State University in 2009. He led the Gorillas pitching staff that year with a 3.71 ERA in 80.0 innings of work. He has the fourth most strikeouts in a single season at the school with 77. Brown is the career leader in lowest amount of walks per nine innings pitched with an average of 0.83 and holds the two best single-season marks in the same category with an average of 1.04 in 2008 and 0.68 in 2009.
Following the completion of the college season, Brown joined the Lincoln Saltdogs, going 7-1 in 17 appearances with a 2.59 ERA. He also began the 2010 season with Lincoln, but after starting the season 7-5 had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies in July. Brown was placed with the team's Gulf Coast League affiliate where he finished with an impressive 1.50 ERA in seven games spanning 24.0 innings.
He split the 2011 season between Lincoln and Grand Prairie before flourishing with Gateway in the next two seasons. With the Grizzlies, Brown went a combined 25-5 in 39 starts with a 2.61 ERA. He struck out 136 batters while issuing just 64 walks. In 2013, he finished second in the Frontier League with a 2.97 ERA. In a game against the Lake Erie Crushers that July, Brown threw the third no-hitter in Grizzlies history, allowing just a pair of base runners via walk.
The return of Brown increases the amount of players signed for 2015 to 23. The roster can include up to 28 players until two days prior to the start of the regular season when the active roster must be trimmed to 22. The eighth season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins on Thursday, May 21st in Joplin, with the home opener against the Winnipeg Goldeyes taking place on Tuesday, May 26th.
