San Jose Giants News Release
MODESTO, CA - Modesto starting pitcher Harrison Musgrave took a shutout into the eighth inning and the Nuts knocked out 14 hits en route to a 7-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at John Thurman Field. In the rubber game of the series, San Jose was limited to just five hits and committed three errors. The Giants (28-38) finished their seven-game road trip with a 3-4 record.
Musgrave (8-1) picked-up his league-leading eighth win of the season after tossing seven-plus innings with two runs (both earned) and four hits allowed. The Nuts left-hander walked one and struck out five.
The game was scoreless until Modesto's Jordan Patterson smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth off of San Jose starter Jason Forjet. Meanwhile, the Giants managed only two baserunners over the first five innings against Musgrave - a leadoff single in the first from Seth Harrison and a Jesus Galindo two-out single in the top of the third.
With the Nuts ahead by a 1-0 score, San Jose threatened in the top of the sixth. Ty Ross drew a walk to start the frame before a Galindo's sacrifice bunt advanced the potential tying run to second. Harrison was then hit by a pitch, but Christian Arroyo followed by grounding into a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play.
Luis Ysla relieved Forjet to begin the bottom of the sixth and immediately ran into trouble. After a leadoff single from Patterson, Ryan McMahon blasted an RBI double off the fence in right center to extend the Modesto lead to 2-0. Then after a Correlle Prime sacrifice bunt, Rosell Herrera delivered an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage.
The Nuts then broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the seventh. Consecutive singles from Dillon Thomas and Ashley Graeter began the inning and knocked Ysla (1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) out of the game. Tyler Rogers (2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) was summoned from the bullpen to face Zach Osborne, who dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Cesar Galvez followed with a single into left through the drawn-in infield to make it 4-0. Then with runners at second and third and two outs, McMahon hit a slow grounder to first that was mishandled by Ben Turner for an error. Second baseman Austin Slater went over to field the ball, but his hurried throw to first with Rogers covering sailed wide and bounced into the Modesto dugout. Two errors were charged on the play as one run scored and the Nuts advanced runners to second and third. Prime then stepped to the plate and singled up the middle to score both runners increasing the lead to 7-0.
The Giants' only two runs of the night came in the top of the eighth. Turner led off with a single and immediately scored when the next batter, Brian Ragira, laced a double into the left center field gap. The hit chased Musgrave as Devin Burke entered from the Modesto bullpen. Burke promptly uncorked a wild pitch advancing Ragira to third before Ross' groundout to shortstop scored a run and brought San Jose to within 7-2.
Burke then pitched around a leadoff double from Arroyo in the top of the ninth to close out the Nuts victory.
Forjet (2-2) was saddled with the loss despite allowing just one run over five innings. The right-hander surrendered five hits with one walk and four strikeouts during his 80-pitch performance.
Notes:
* The Giants finished the first half with a 12-23 road record. San Jose has not won a series away from home this season.

* Ryder Jones' (0-for-4) hitting streak was snapped at six games.
* Forjet owns a 1.93 ERA (3 ER/14.0 IP) in three starts this season.
