CLEARWATER, Fla. - Miguel Nunez worked a gem in a 5-4 Clearwater Threshers' loss to the Brevard County Manatees at Bright House Field, but the Manatees rallied late against the Threshers' pen to upend Clearwater on Sunday afternoon.
Nunez worked a career-high eight innings and allowed just one run on four hits, a walk, and picked up five strikeouts.
Clearwater (28-36) took the early lead in the first when J.P. Crawford knocked a solo shot to right to put the Threshers up 1-0.
Art Charles broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth when he launched his 19th home run of the season over the right field wall to give the Threshers a 2-1 advantage.
Brevard County (32-30) countered in the ninth off of Lee Ridenhour (2-8).
Orlando Arcia led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyrone Taylor.
Michael Reed ripped a double into the right field corner to plate Arcia and knot the game up at two. Victor Roache singled past a diving Harold Martinez at third, bringing in Reed to put the Manatees ahead, 3-2.
Cameron Garfield singled to center to score Roache to give Brevard County a two-run cushion.
Ethan Stewart took over for Ridenhour and got Garrett Cooper to ground into a fielder's choice, but Garza scored on the play to make it a three-run game.
The Threshers fought back in the ninth when Crawford sent a two-run shot out to right-center to bring the Manatees' lead to one.
Brian Pointer walked, and Charles singled him over to third to put the tying run 90 feet away.
Corey Bass worked a 2-2 count before bouncing out to short to end the game.
The Threshers have an off day Monday before heading to George M. Steinbrenner Field to take on the Tampa Yankees in a three-game series beginning Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be heard live starting at 6:45 p.m. on threshersbaseball.com.
