Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Dante Rosenberg had one at-bat on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium and it was a big one. The Palm Beach Cardinals catcher hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift his team over the Bradenton Marauders 12-11 in one of the most exciting games of the year.
The Cardinals are now in sole possession of first place in the FSL South Division with seven games remaining in the regular season.
With the score knotted at 11-11 in the 10th inning, Rosenberg sent a Josh Smith pitch into right field to drive in Jimmy Bosco from second and give the Cardinals the 12-11 victory. It was Rosenberg's first plate appearance of the game after coming in to catch for Gerwuins Velazco in the top half of the 10th.
Bosco laced a double to the right field corner to get into scoring position for Rosenberg in the final inning. Besides scoring the winning run, Bosco had huge game for Palm Beach. He went 4-for-6 with three runs, four RBI, a triple and two doubles on the afternoon, and finished just a home run short of the cycle.
Mason Katz and Cesar Valera each chipped in three hits to lead the Birds at the plate.
The two squads combined to score 23 runs on 35 hits and six errors in the offensive showdown.
The Cardinals (38-25, 74-58) held a 10-6 advantage heading into the ninth but the Marauders (37-26, 72-60) scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a Jacob Stallings grand slam, to go ahead 11-10.
But the Birds were able to rally once again in the bottom half.
Velazco reached on a walk and Valera followed with an infield hit to put two ducks on the pond for Katz. The second baseman hit a hard grounder to the gap between third and short for a base hit and a subsequent throwing error by Bradenton shortstop Adam Frazier allowed Palm Beach to tie the game 11-11.
The Marauders jumped out in front 3-0 in the contest but the Cardinals pieced together a string of five unanswered runs to claim the lead after five complete. Palm Beach used three extra-base hits - doubles by David Washington and Velazco and a triple by Bosco - to put two runs on the board in the fourth. An Anthony Garcia RBI single and a two-run single by Bosco in the fifth gave the Cards their first lead of the game at 5-3.
Palm Beach had a huge seventh inning to put some distance between the Pirates affiliate. Garcia and Bosco RBI doubles and a two-run single off the bat of Katz helped the team tally five runs in the frame and build a 10-5 lead over the Marauders.
Bradenton got a run back in the eighth before its dramatic ninth-inning comeback.
Logan Billbrough (1-0) tossed a scoreless 10th inning to set the Cardinals up for the thrilling game-winner. He was credited with the win.
Smith (3-2) allowed two runs over 1.1 innings of relief and took the loss for Bradenton.
Palm Beach will play its eighth game of the current 12-game homestand on Monday night against Jupiter. RH Tyrell Jenkins (5-4, 3.39) will start for the Cardinals in the final edition of the 2014 Fins vs. Feathers Series. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
