Number-Two Richmond Holds on to Win 74 to 64 over Columbus

Richmond, VA - When 33 points are scored in the final minute and 38 seconds of a game, one might begin to believe anything can happen in indoor football. Perhaps it can. Columbus Lions QB, Randy Hippeard, had a stellar night, for example, completing 23 of 37 passing attempts with one interception for a total of 348 yards and nine touchdowns. But he still ended up losing the game.
The Lions jumped out in front early, scoring on the second play from scrimmage with an 11 yard pass from Hippeard to Maurice Dupree, but they fell behind19 to 16 with just over a minute left to go in the first quarter. They took the lead briefly in the second quarter 23 to 22, but fell behind with just under five minutes left in the first half and never regained the lead.
Richmond QB Antwon Young completed 17 of 32 with no interceptions for 268 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed seven times for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Richmond fullback Jordan Pavilisin rushed eight times for 40 yards and scored two TDs. Rushing by the Lions was almost nonexistent. Randy Hippeard gained five yards on that team's only rushing attempt.
The Raiders other touchdown came from linebacker, Preston Hines, who scored on a fumbled snap recovered in the Lions end zone.
The final minute and 38 seconds took 20 or longer to actually minutes to play. Richmond was ahead 61 to 44 when the Lions scored to bring the score to 61 to 50. A Lions' onside kick failed and the Raiders scored on a 15 yard run by Pavilison. The Lions scored again soon after the ensuing kickoff, and so it went back and forth. The final score took place on a 30 yard pass from Hippeard to London Crawford with 15 seconds left on the clock. The Lions' onside kick failed, and the game ended with the score, Raiders 74, Lions 64.
Richmond and other PIFL teams are taking Memorial Day Weekend off. Then Richmond has two away games in a row--at Alabama on June 2 and at Knoxville on June 9. The next home game is a big one against the number-one Albany Panthers at the Richmond Coliseum on June 16.
The Lions play next on June 2 on the road at Louisiana.
