Worcester Bravehearts News Release
Norwich, CT - The Norwich Sea Unicorns overcame a 9-4 deficit and Auburn's CJ Willis (Western New England) beat his hometown team with a solid single to left in the 9th inning as Norwich beat Worcester 10-9 on Saturday night.
The game-winning hit capped off a night in which the Sea Unicorns chipped away at Bravehearts' pitching with two runs in the 6th, one in the 8th, and three in the 9th off Ben Smith (Worcester State University) and Cam Seymour (Southern Maine), who took the loss. The Bravehearts have lost 4 in-a-row to Norwich, and have given up 10 or more runs in each of those games.
Jackson Ferrigno added two hits, and Bo Yaworski went 3-for-5 to pace the offense for Norwich, which rocked Worcester pitching for 14 hits.
The ninth inning comeback prevented Ben Smith from earning his first victory of the season for the Bravehearts. He pitched five innings in relief of Bravehearts-starter, Mike Simes (UMass-Lowell) of Holden.
On a night that also featured several offensive stars for Worcester, Cam Seymour - who started the game at first base - provided the biggest hit when he launched a fastball from Jordan Marot off the secondary fence in center field for a three-run home run. The homer was his third of the year, setting Worcester on the way to a 5-run inning. Seymour also walked twice.
Lewis Barnum (Bryant University) started the scoring for the Bravehearts in the first inning, lining a solid double into the right-center field gap and scoring Jack Goodman (Pepperdine) and Gavin Noriega (Marist) to give Worcester a 2-0 lead. After some wildness by Norwich starter Sean Wininger (Central Connecticut State), catcher Trey Bourque (Skidmore) came through in his first at-bat of the summer by lining a single off the pitcher's glove and knocking in Barnum for Worcester's third run. A hit-batsman would bring in a 4th run for the Bravehearts in the first inning.
Noriega went 3-for-5 and now has six consecutive multi-hit games. The 2021 All Star is now 20 for his last 35 since June 24, raising his average to a season high of .363 - good for third in the Futures League.
The loss drops Worcester to 15-17 and they head back to Connecticut on Sunday for a 6:35 PM matchup against the New Britain Bees.
