North Wins 2005 Dodge CH All-Star Game 14-13 In Shootout

LAREDO, Texas â The Northern Conference edged the Southern Conference 14-13 in a shootout in the 2005 Dodge CHL All-Star Game at the Laredo Entertainment Center on Wednesday night in front of 5,500 fans. Colorado forward Greg Pankewicz set a CHL All-Star Game Record with nine points on five goals and four assists.
The netminders grabbed center stage in the first 10 minutes as Northern goalie Tyler Weiman of COL was perfect and Southern goalie Scott Reid of SNG allowed just one goal to WIC defenseman Paul Esdale at 3:33. In the second half of the first period the teams cranked it into high gear. COR forward Greg Bullock slammed in a nice pass at 11:44 to tie the game for the Southern Conference. Then Pankewicz set up WIC forward Travis Clayton for two quick goals at 14:25 and 16:54 to give the Northern Conference a 3-1 lead. Pankewicz then scored on a breakaway at 18:00. Jason Baird of COR fired home a great wrist shot for the Southern Conference at 18:32, but the Northern Conference came right back with a goal from OKC forward Michel Beausoleil at 18:52 to cap first period scoring. The Northern Conference held a 5-2 lead over the Southern Conference after one period.
The teams wasted no time getting going in the second period. LUB forward Anders Strome wristed home a shot top shelf at 2:16, but Pankewicz was back at it scoring his second of the night at 2:29. Mike Lukajic of TOP then scored at 4:40 to make it 7-3 Northern Conference. Bullock picked up his second of the night at 4:59 for the Southern, but the Northern came back with quick goals by Kevin Marsh of COL and Beausoleil for his second at 5:39 and 7:13 respectively to make it 9-4 North. Pankewicz then scored his second at 9:35 to extend the lead to 10-4 Northern. Down six goals the Southern Conference began to chip away as Benoit Genesse from ODE lit the lamp at 12:21, then Derek Hahn of Amarillo was set up by Genesse at 12:21. John McNabb of AUS trimmed the deficit to 10-7 with a goal at 17:00, but Pankewicz completed the hat trick with a goal at 17:54. Ken Carroll of BOS stopped 17 of 22 shots, while Lance Leslie of LUB stopped 16 of 22. In all there were 11 combined goals score in the second period.
In the third period the Southern Conference came out and quickly trimmed the deficit as Baird and Strome each scored their second of the night at :22 and 1:38 to make it 11-9. Pankewicz then scored his fourth of the night at 3:37 to give the Northern Conference a 12-9 lead. The Southern Conference refused to give up. Jason Tessier of RGV scored at 5:57, but Don Parsons of MEM again gave the Northern Conference a three goal lead at 6:49. The Southern Conference came right back as McNabb grabbed his second at 8:03, then the home crowd erupted as forward Adam Paiement of LAR brought the South within 13-12 at 8:21. Just over three minutes later Baird completed the hat trick at 11:31 to tie the game at 13-13. The teams traded chances down the stretch, but neither could score and the game went to overtime. LAR goalie Jeremy Symington was outstanding in the third period, stopping 29 of 31 shots, while Miguel Beaudry of NMX stopped 24 of 30.
In overtime, neither team could score and the game headed to a shootout. In the shootout the Northern Conference scored on three of six shots and Lukajic registered the game winner. The Southern Conference scored on two of six. Final score Northern 14, Southern 13.
