Traverse City North Stars News Release
BLAINE, Minn. - Tyler Marble has been nearly impenetrable so far this season for the Traverse City North Stars, and he did something on Thursday that no one has done in the team's six-year history: post back-to-back shutouts.
Marble (Howell, MI/TC North Stars/Lake Superior St.) snuffed all 42 shots he faced, leading the North Stars to a 4-0 victory over expansion Austin on the second day of action at the NAHL Showcase in suburban Minneapolis. Unlike Wednesday's 1-0 blanking of Corpus Christi (17 shots), Marble saw plenty of rubber on Thursday, and helped fend off seven Bruins power plays. He has permitted just a single goal in three starts this season as the Stars move to 3-0 for the first time in team history.
The Traverse City offense was paced by Ryan Amin (Canton, MI/TC North Stars), who lodged a two-goal outing for the second time this season. He also had a pair in the Stars' season-opening victory at Chicago on Sunday. Kelin Ainsworth (Thunder Bay, ONT/TC North Stars/Lake Superior St.) dished out a trio of assists.
Jared Van Wormer (Traverse City, MI/TC Central HS) opened the scoring with a nifty bit of stickhandling, finally backhanding the puck into the net with the Stars shorthanded less than a minute before the first intermission. Ainsworth and Curtis Heinz (Grand Rapids, MI/TC North Stars) assisted. Traverse City also recorded the only goal of the second stanza, with Amin scoring his third of the season at 13:35 to put the Stars ahead 2-0, with Ainsworth drawing the only assist.
Taylor Burden (Carmel, IN/TC North Stars) took a backdoor pass from Ainsworth just 1:10 into the final frame and banged it home for a 3-0 lead, and Amin closed out the scoring with 8:33 to play. Travis White (Sterling Heights, MI/TC North Stars) was credited with an assist on Burden's marker, while Trevor Campbell (Kansas City, MO/TC North Stars) and Alec Shields (Pittsburgh, PA/TC North Stars) set up Amin's team-leading fourth. Both third period tallies came on the power play.
The North Stars will play Wenatchee (Wa.) on Friday and Alaska on Saturday to close out the Showcase. Traverse City is 2-1 all-time against Wenatchee - including a thrilling 4-3 victory over the host Wild in the opening game of last season's Robertson Cup championships - and is also 2-1 all-time against Alaska. The Stars and Avalanche have played in each of the previous three Showcase events, claiming a 6-1 triumph in 2007, dropping a 4-3 affair in 2008, and blanking the Avs 3-0 last season.
The Stars' home opener is slated for Oct. 15 at Centre ICE Arena against Springfield (Ill.).
