North Shore Spirit News Release
LYNN -- The North Shore Spirit, who came within one game of winning a league championship this year, have re-signed two of their frontline players, second baseman Marcos Agramonte and first baseman Vic Davilla.
Agramonte, 28, hit .281 with 14 doubles, 6 triples, 3 home runs and 21 RBI last year. He suffered an injury in the last series of the regular season and missed all 10 playoff games, as the Spirit beat the Quebec Capitales in five games, before losing to the New Jersey Jackals in five in the Northeast League championship series.
In 2003, Agramonte hit .309 for the Spirit with a league-leading 116 hits and 15 triples. He added 12 doubles, 3 home runs and 46 RBI. A native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, he signed with the Texas Rangers as a non-drafted free agent in 1997 and played in the Texas organization for four years before signing with the Spirit in their inaugural season in 2003.
Davilla, 32, came to the Spirit in 2004 after being named league MVP the previous season with Allentown. He hit .330 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI for the Spirit, but he also suffered an injury which forced him to miss the deciding fifth game of the divisional series and the first four games of the championship series.
With Allentown in '03, Davilla led the league in total bases (199), slugging percentage (.601), RBI (74), and on-base percentage (.419), and was second in batting average (.338), home runs (20) and hits (112).
A New York City native, Davilla was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993 and played in their organization for four years. He has been playing independent league baseball since 1997.
The North Shore Spirit are members of the new CanAm League, which will begin play in 2005. The league also features Bangor, Brockton, Elmira, New Haven, New Jersey and Québec. An eighth team is expected to be added for the 2005 season.
