Mobile, Ala. - The North Division All-Stars posted a two-run third inning and added four in the fifth on their way to a 12-5 Wednesday night win over the South Division at the Southern League All-Star Game in Mobile.
A crowd of 5,580 at Hank Aaron Stadium saw the North Division team take an early lead behind the bat of the Stars' Tony Gwynn, Jr., who drove in the Lookouts' Jeff Bannon on a line drive to left field to give the North a 1-0 lead. The squad would score again when Jeremy Hermida, of Carolina, singled to right field allowing Gwynn, Jr. to score.
After the South All-Stars cut the lead to three in the eighth inning, the North Division answered back quickly. The knockout blow came when West Tenn's Casey McGehee homered with two on to push the advantage to 9-3 in favor of the North All-Stars.
Smokies' pitcher Enrique Gonzalez tossed a scoreless third inning, striking out two batters. Mike Schultz walked one in the sixth, but kept the South Division off the scoreboard in the frame. Casey Daigle rounded out the Smokies' All-Star effort on the hill surrendering two hits in the eighth, but he also frustrated Southern batters by not allowing them to score.
Tennessee's two position players, Jesus Cota and Dan Uggla, did well at the plate. Cota went 1-for-5 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double. Uggla was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Play was halted after the seventh inning came to a close when home plate umpire Garret Watson left the game due to exhaustion from the heat and humidity.
The Smokies return to action Friday against the BayBears at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile for three games before heading to West Tenn.
