Norfolk Tides News Release
Oscar Salazar homered and drove in three to power Norfolk to a 4-2 win over Charlotte Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park.
After Charlotte plated two runs in the top of the first, Salazar tied the contest in the bottom half of the inning with a long homer off the left field scoreboard. Salazar then gave the Tides a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning with a two-out single that plated Jeff Fiorentino.
Salazar has now hit safely in nine straight contests and is hitting .400 (20-for-50) with a homer and nine RBI this season.
Tides starter Chris Waters (2-1) labored in the first frame but followed with four solid innings to pick up his second straight win over the Knights. Waters yielded two runs in the first on a two-out triple by Michael Restovich, but faced just two batters over the minimum over his next four innings to help Norfolk notch its seventh straight win.
Waters allowed four hits and two walks in the outing, striking out three.
Norfolk's bullpen turned in another outstanding outing on the afternoon, as Andy Mitchell, Alberto Castillo, Bob McCrory and Jim Miller combined to allow four hits in four scoreless innings of work. Miller worked around two singles in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.
Charlotte starter Jeff Marquez (0-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Scott Moore singled three times to pace Norfolk's 12-hit attack, while Jeff Fiorentino, Steve Torrealba and Carlos Rojas each had two hits apiece in the win.
The Tides are now 5-1 against Charlotte this season, having outscored the Knights 30-7.
Norfolk (8-4) will welcome in the Durham Bulls to Harbor Park on Thursday night for the start of a four-game series with the top affiliates of the Tampa Bay Rays. Dave Hernandez (0-0, 2.08) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against Bulls left-hander Carlos Hernandez (0-0, 0.93). First pitch is scheduled for 7:15.
